DougM,

I would say buy and try it, and if it does not meet your expectations, most stores will accept returns for product unsuitability.

The big problem I found with cheap battery powered trimmers and blowers is battery life. After 6 months of occassional use mine would barely hold a charge so they became useless. The B&D you describe may be better in this regard, but ask yourself how you'll feel if you only get 2 years out of it.

Thats the weak link in battery things[of course THE BATTERY],probably be lucky to get 3 days of use out of a battery operated weed eater, let alone years. [for something like this, rechargeable batteries just ain't the way to go,get you a gas one.]

You might think about those new propane powered weed whackers at Lowe's.

I have watched my neighbour go through two battery powered weed wackers in 2 summers. When they fail, I finish off what he was working on with my gas powered Home Despot clearance Ryobi. :p
JMHO -- I would avoid it

I owned a Toro cordless string trimmer. It was 18 volt, I think. I actually bought it for my wife so she didn't have an engine to start in order to tidy up the little bit of grass in her herb garden. I haven't used it in years. My main complaint was lack of power and the battery life. It was useless if the grass was thick or long. It just didn't generate enough speed or torque to do the job. The 36 volt might be better but unless they were giving them away, I wouldn't bother.
