Weight Distributing Hitch On Dump or Equipment Trailer?

Do you have to modify the trailer to accept the wd? Looks like brackets or something would be mounted on the trailers.

I have two equipment trailers, one 6" channel iron tongue, and one one 12" I-beam tongue. I can make one hitch work on both, correct?

You do have to mount the brackets to the trailers a-frame for the WD hitch. The brackets I use are "pinch" type that do not require welding or drilling to mount. The draw back is the trailers frame rail that you mount them to cannot be more than 2-1/2" wide. If your trailers' frames are not wider than 2-1/2" then you can get one set of them and move them back and forth between trailers with ease although I would probably just buy two sets so each trailer is already setup. That is all you need on the trailer.

How much longer does is take to hook up? Looks a little more... complicated than I am used to. A couple minutes would be worth it I guess. I'm country, we just started using balls, lights, brakes, and safety chains a few years ago. Used to just be pins.:shocked:

If you leave the brackets in place, under 5 minutes for both sides. I run them on our 6'X16' as the hitch load sometimes is in the 750 lb range which is over the 5000/500 limit for non WD of the hitch. With WD the hitch is rated 12000/1200.

The first time you set up the hitch will take a good 20 minutes or so until you have the right height setup and know which chain link to hook on. After that, each time you hook up will take a whole 30 seconds longer than just dropping the trailer on a standard ball.

It takes about as long as hooking up the safety chains.

What would you do if the trailer had front mounted tool box with the pump/controls in it? Would you still be able to mount the WD hitch?
