Most of you know me here and know my tractor is down. I want to start planting some winter crops. With my land the way it is.... is there anything I can plant that will grow fairly good? I have an ideal that greens... Turnips, Collards, Radishes and Cabbage will do ok. Any other suggestions? I will continue Link to: My Project by hand until I can get things worked out. Thank you all for your support.

I think I'd ask around to see if someone can come do some of your ground work for you. Shouldn't cost you too much and would be faster and/or you could plant more stuff.

Best wishes,
ron

LOL.......... ok point well taken. I meant the way the soil is without it being plowed anymore. Like it was left from clearing.

I have done the asking. Most people around here are planting winter crops and/or doing things with their tractors and don't have time to help me with my endeavor. Very few live around me that have tractors unless they have chicken houses and some major acres of land. Their up keep time keeps them very busy. Some work jobs along with farming the way the economy is here.

If I was still working my Vice President Job I wouldn't have the time either. My company sold out controling interest and they shut down and then restarted. Complete different goals, and employees... most brought in from another state. And some with cheaper salaries because of the people they hired. But that's another story. I have taken my time and savings to do this. I am looking for work as well while I do this. I would like to get a job where I can do this and work.

I plant everything by hand, even in my bigger garden. For big seeds, you just push the seed into the ground with a finger or thumb. Just brush some soil over the hole to cover the entrance. This is for bean-sized seeds, including corn (too late for these now though). For mid size seed (and often for corn), I just slice a furrow using a small hoe or the edge of a big hoe and just drop the seed into the furrow at the right spacing and then go back with the back side of the hoe and cover the seed. For small seed, like carrot and lettuce, I mix the seed in copious amounts of sand and sprinkle the sand along the furrow.

This will just have to work without plowing. The ground is somewhat plowed when we back dragged it with the dozer teeth. Just maybe the seed will be somewhat productive without the proper plowing. I know I need to try and get some planted before the rain sets in here from Hurricane Katrina... could be atleast 2 to 4 inches even if it goes west of us they say. I have Monday only before rain sets in on Monday Night. If the Cold Front stalls we will get even more rain. If we get that much rain... it will possibly wash or atleast settle the dirt and it will have to be plowed no questions. I wanted to try and get some planted before so if we did get that much rain... it wouldn't be a total loss.

Thanks for the information. I like the way you planted with carrot and lettuce seed. I never tried it that way. It will be intersting to see how it works.

Have you considered renting a walk behind tiller for the weekend.

Think about planting before a big rain?? You just may get to plant twice!

I 've a little Ryobi tiller that I use to run down the top of the raised rows to bust up any clods. It's similar to the Mantis that you've probably seen advertised. Now, I've my JD soil buster bar set up with 4 chisel plows to do the raised rows and discs to clear out between the rows. Still, might need to use my little tiller atop the rows for final cleanup. Ideal would be to have a tiny tiller to churn up the rows just behind where the discs run. Attached is a pic of what I have.

I just dug about 3-4 # of carrots for some kids' education on Friday and dropped them by their house yesterday. Still eating carrot casserole from digging about 5# that I did for myself. Still have about 1/3 of that row yet to dig.

Hope Katrina doesn't hit as hard as Isabel did 3 years ago here. She submerged my garden about 6' deep. I'd taken up everything except the electirc fencing (without the charger). There was debris hanging onto the fence. I've just too much stuff to bring in from down there now. Still have gobs of watermellon and squash still ripening. Still picking beans and okra and have popcorn ripening, too. Got soaker hoses down every one of the 20 rows. Too much to take in for Katrina. Hope she misses us.

Isabel left me about 3-4" of compost and created a nice beach on the creek. Didn't have access to the creek before.

Jim:
I appreciate what you are trying to do. I am in SC too. I am not a farmer, but I am learning to be. I will tellyou what I have learned - first step is to send off a sample to Clemson for testing. They will tell you exactly how much fertilizer to put down per acre. work your butt off with the wrong ph and you got nothing. Clemson will tell you what you need (if anything) Maybe 50 pounds, more, or less. Just because that land was fallow doesn't mean it is ready to grow crops. the next most important thing I learned this year is soil compaction. (or avoiding compaction, that is) Compaction is a farmer's enemy. jEvenafter planting, you just lightly rake loose dirt over, you don't pack it in.

We plow with a chisel plow and then harrow with disk to break up the soil, loosen it up. If you could fluff it up into a powder that would be ideal. (Obviously tillers are perfect forthis role once you have plowed the new ground). But you don't need a tiller. Your new ground will need to be chisel plowed three ways, strait, 90degrees, then 45 degrees. then disk it to break up the clods. I saw your yellow scarifier, that will be perfect.

Having said all that, i realize your chinese job laid down on you, so instead of plowing the whole field now, can you rent a walk behind tiller and till a 12 inch wide strip for the length of the field, every 12 to 24 inches? If you can do that, then if you start this weekend, you have 45 days till Oct 15 and the first frost. You can get a butload of collards in, carrots, and a handful of other fall crops that may produce for you. seeing as how beans need 60 days roughly, I can't see you producing any now. But you may still try collards and carrots. and a little bit of miracel grow. im in saluda county.
