Thomas,

I'm a big Niven fan also... I'd love to wander around ringworld...

I also like TANSTAAFL...

There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch...

David

Hi David,

Sorry so long away, PT and fall prep have kept me from the elctronic media for a bit. (Oh and the return of The Walking Dead....., which for us is a multi-household family watching event usually associated with food.

TANSTAAFL may also have been a Heinlein quote via my old uncle Ted Bronson.

:)

Some of you folks seem to have more than one "favorite" saying...different scenarios different sayings...I understand...But I'll stick with my original on the topic...

" If you hear hoof beats...think horses not zebras"...
Sorry, but I had to cnange that a bit to the way we say it in medicine.

..And then:

But don't forget that it could be a Zebra and be sure to account for the possibility.

There's no such thing as a free lunch

"The 'there ain't no such thing as a free lunch' version of the phrase is often reduced to the acronym TANSTAAFL. This is widely associated with the science fiction writer Robert Heinlein. he did used the term several times in his 1966 novel The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, but the coinage of the acronym pre-dates that by at least a quarter of a century. The earliest citation I can find for tanstaafl is from October 1949, when it appeared in a book review published in several US newspapers, including The Independent Record: "
