I bought this 7' cutter yesterday. The guy I bought it from didn't know much about it, and I have no idea what it might be. The slip clutch is cracked near the u-joint. I am thinking about replacing the 2-piece shaft with a 1-piece. Would that work?

NO!

You need the2 piece shaft to allow the length of the shaft to change as the implement is raised and lowered as well as to allow you to hook it up to the PTO.

Just buy a new slip clutch, sharpen the blades and enjoy.

Looks like the geometry would work with a single telescoping shaft, vs the short shaft and the pillow block. Actually looks like it would help the angle on the pto shaft yoke/ujoint. Just make sure you get a shaft with either the slip clutch.. or at least shear protection setup.

John.. I'm pretty sure he means a 'single' (2-part) telescoping shaft.. vs the arangement the mower is using which involves a single (2-part) telescoping shaft.. coupled to a short 'fixed driveline using a pillow block and a slip clutch inline. IE.. he could add a single 2-part pto driveline with slipclutch and be just fine... in fact.. probably better... less ujoints to wear.. no greasing the pillow block.. and a lower angle on the set of U joints.

Yes, that's what I meant. Any good sources for such a shaft? It would need to be about 62" long.

Wow, that's a tank of a cutter. Looks like an Alamo/Rhino gearbox but I've never seen anything like that deck.

I'd think that to use a single shaft you'd have to remove the pillow-block or you couldn't raise the deck, and it don't look trivial to remove. You'll probably need a Cat 5 driveline which ain't cheap. Is that a drum/shoe type clutch? I'd lean more towards repairing/replacing the clutch.

I'd install some bolt on deck skids for mowing grass to cut down on scalping. Cool find, thanks for the pic.

Yes, it is a tank. I'd guess it weighs 1200+lbs judging by how light it made the rear of my 55 feel when I was using the fel to unload it off of my trailer.

I believe it is a disc type clutch. The front section of the pto shaft appears to be in working order, so I may try to find a clutch for it. It would help if I knew what to ask for.

Oh, and it already has skids on the front.

Thanks for the replies. Keep the ideas coming.

Just for kicks.. price a cat 5 driveline with slip clutch. Check the input shaft of the mower to see if it is smooth with a thru-hole.. or is splined.. or is smooth with a keyway.

The pto input shaft is splined.

I found this place PTO Shaft. If I am looking at this chart correctly, it looks like I could use the medium duty with clutch for 5-7' rotary cutters?

I'm going to do some more measuring and thinking on this.

Splined input shaft meanis it was pretty deffinately designed for a torque limiter... as long as it is a standard spline.. you should ahve no problem.
