I want to work on some hog damage in our lower pasture (around 5 acres) as well as disc some mounds in a couple other fields to break up the dirt to scoop up with my FEL to use to set several culverts in gullies along our fence line. Looking for recommendations on what size as well as a what brand(s) I should consider. 3-point hitch Rear lift (at ends): 2,866 lbs. Rear lift (at 24"): 2,310 lbs.

Haven't decided if I'm going new or used, depends on what I can find in the area.

LD1 has a 10' or 12' Deere disc he pulls behind his MX, which is HST. For what you're talking about a heavyish 7-8' would probably be best. Or a 6-7' tiller. Unless you've got a lot of ground to work up, the tiller would probably do a better job and be a lot handier.

Having just acquired a tiller last year with having used a disc harrow for 40 years, I'd say go with the tiller for what and where you are doing. Mine is a 6' from TSC and my Ford 3000, less than 40 hp, handles it more than adequately. Other thing is one pass (slow as it may be but...) does it all and does it as deep (2-3") as you can get with each pass of your harrow. I run mine at a comfortable rpm.

If you have a lot of trash or long stemmed grasses and weeds, brush hogging before you do either method would be best.

If you have sandy dirt you will find a disk is harder to pull than a harder dirt as it will penetrate easier in the softer dirt. Also traction is not as good in sandy dirt. If you can find used heavy disk probably better option than newer light weight disk.

Appreciate the replies everyone. It's roughly 5 acres and pretty good topsoil. Some areas on the farm are a bit sandy. The farm is about 3 hours north of Houston so I was looking at this bush hog 2D7818 but wasn't sure if it was too heavy. Sounds like I may need to look at a tiller. With the depth of some of the holes, I wasn't sure if a tiller would help to level the dirt as it works. The field has gotten worse since this pic but it gives you a pretty good idea of what I'm dealing with. We have started trapping (caught 8 weekend before last) and I now have a thermal scope.

I don't think you will have any trouble pulling a 6' disc, we used to pull one with a 40 year old (then) Ford 8N. I spent last weekend pulling a drag behind that was twice that wide with only 20 more horsepower than you have and it did fine.

I have 30+ acres that looks EXACTLY like that. I use a 30Hp 16 speed 4WD tractor with a loader. Total combined weight with the tiller, tractor and FEL is just over 4,000lbs. But my 250 sexy self in the seat and a half a ton of rocks in the loader with a 6 foot woods tiller running at 540RPM, even after glyphosate on the sod was just scratching the surface. Sure, I had some descent looking places here and there but I knew something was wrong. And lots of people gave me good advice to no avail. Please take a half hour and call the guys at Everything Attachments. Ask for Jeremy. He put me in a heavy 7 footer that was gear driven. No chain. He told me that if the tiller was "pushing" the tractor forward too much, then take off the outer tines on both sides the first time you till it. Unbelievable the difference that unit made. They know their products pretty good there. Make sure you know the year, make and model of your unit and they'll match you with the right tiller. Guaranteed. PLUS, FREE SHIPPING within 1,000 miles of the Carolina's. Give them a shot. If you don't like them - don't buy. But I'm sure you will. Good luck and Godspeed - BotaTrac Out!

Yep, I run a jd210 transport disc with 32 18" pans. Gangs are adjustable, front is set about Midway which is about a 70 degree gang angle. Rear is backed off to 75 degrees.

If I made it the most agressive I can, it would probably struggle.

I have AG tires, loaded, and 600# wheel weights. In heavy soil, low range about 3.5 mph top speed...don't even know is back there. Trying med range I run out of power if discing full depth. Slows the tractor to the point I might as well be in low range. A gear tractor should have no issues though but you didn't say what tires you have either.

And with 32 pans on 9" spacing....jd lists this as a 11'5" disc.
