Where can I buy Chinese takeout sweet and sour sauce?

We get Chinese takeout but never seem to get enough sweet and sour sauce. I'm not ever sure that's what it's called. Maybe it's called duck sauce? Maybe the two are the same? It's that's orangeish-reddish sauce that you get with some dishes and can get a little container to go if you ask for it.

In any event, I have tried to buy various sauces over the years and none were whatever this sauce is. Surely someone here must know what it is and where to get it. It's the sauce that comes with sweet and sour chicken. Any help on this?

Not enough. Wife made a great rice dish tonight and some of that sauce would have been great. We need our own independent supply as opposed to begging for it.

I love it and make sure I get lots when I go to our local joint but here's what I found when doing a search.


1/3 cup white or rice vinegar (Note: rice vinegar gives better results)
4 tablespoons brown sugar 1 tablespoon ketchup 1 teaspoon soy sauce
2 teaspoons cornstarch mixed with 4 teaspoons water

I have no idea if it's as good. I'll subscribed and will see what is offered as advise.

I've had both sweet and sour and duck sauce and there's a big difference IMO.

For "duck sauce" Try this ... Buy a jar of apricot preserves. The no-name or house brand is better. The expensive brands have more chunks of apricot, but I don't like chunks in the sauce. Mix the preserves with white distilled vinegar.... to taste. :licking: If it's too thick add a little water to thin it.
