Who owns their own propane tank?

I lease my 500 gallon tank for $60/year and I get the privilege of paying an extra .10 per gallon for 'insurance' in the event the regulator fails etc. When asked if this 'insurance' replaces 'my' leaked propane from 'their' faulty tank/regulator/whatever the answer was 'no'. ;)

They are definitely an industry in need of a bit of regulation I think. When we first moved in I couldn't get them to show up for my monthly fills under the my 'automatic' plan. They wanted to charge an extra 'will call' fee when I finally had to call and inquire about my missing fill. I switched to pellets for heat and only use the propane for back up heat and the kitchen stove. Went from monthly fills in the winter to not having had a fill in 5 years. The other day I come home to a 'courtesy note' on my door letting me know my tank is only at 35% and they are doing a summer fill program ;) I was going to fill this year anyway just in case. I call and they tell me the price... but it is 'going up tomorrow and we are not sure how much' :confused2:

I am just waiting for natural gas to be run up my street and I am switching off propane AND pellets ;)

I just had mine installed (500 gal) at my new place. Not cheap where we live. $170/yr tank rental, $2.86/gal first fill-up. Great customer service and maintenance though, and they spread the cost out over the year.

In FL I rented and paid $60 per year rental and more per gallon of gas

When I moved to CT I bought a 330 (or 350 cant remember) gallon tank, When I call for propane, prices are always cheaper if you own the tank.

Tank cost me $1500 they installed it and hooked it up and filled it.

One thing, make sure the tank is ASME (good for life) not DOT (good for, I think, 10yrs)

I looked at the entire years bills from my propane company, and i have only paid $2.20/gal delivered on all bills. No increases at all. steady thru winter and summer. Man the prices sure vary state to state

Just paid a little over $3.00 / gallon from our local co-op in June then get a bill last week for $75.00 for tank rental.

I don't remember getting the tank rental bills when I was getting a fill up twice a year. (I added a water stove and now only need a fill up every 15 months or so).

I should probably look at buying a tank, any idea what one sells for? I currently have a 500 gallon tank but at the rate I am using it I could go with a 250 gallon.

Also FWIW here in NC the owner of the tank also must own the regulator (state law).

I own mine. Dad bought it several years ago when they bought this place and redid it. dads reason was not to be tied down with one company. We used Dowdle gas several years. When my parents divorced I rented a room from dad. I had the tank filled up and only ran a propan water heater. I had just topped offthe 250 gallon tank. for 109 dollars I paid the bill and pre bought 750 dollars worth. This was right after Katrina and it was going wild. THe next thing I know I get another bill for 109 dollars. I carry my recpt in to sho that I I paid that and prebought the 750. THey had changed owners and all the computers had bee nremoved from the office. My receipt only showed me prebuying the 100 gallons. Basically I was screwed out of 750 dollars. I used another local company and they filled it for me but I notice the first day the tank only read 75 percent. My receipt print out said I had 150 gallons in pumped. I called them and they said my gauge was raeding wrong. I was out in a month. I knew I didnt burn that much. r

I as at a friends shop and the same company came to fill his tank. He bought 100 gallons and after the driver hooked up we walked 100 feet to the truck and the meter already read 40 gallons. It took 15 minutes to to pump the other 60 gallons. I dropped them right quick. Later they fired that driver for selling on the side.

Meanwhile Dowdle which after they were bought out went anywhere from 1.00 to 2.10 per gallon more than the others. I got a bill from them again for testing my tank. THen wanting to come pick it up or charge back rent. I had to show them I owned the tank. We had a new company come in and really clean house. Fair prices, no BS charges, Call before they autofill and at least 1 to 2 bucks cheaper per gallon. They also leave printed accurate receipt. And will maintain a tank free.

We own our tank and the rent house next to us. We stopped renting those years ago.

We dont have to pay to rent our tank, we just use the company that provided the tank.
I ran all the black 3/4 pipe in the house. I had them come in and hook up the lp stove, cook stove, and 3 brick heaters. One valve in the 3/4 run was bad they had to saw it out and reattch the line. I think for over 2 hours of work and all the extra parts they needed it was 200.00.
We have two of the snowman tanks.
Do you all ground your propane lines? I was wondering if I should do that?
