The Gulf of America is surrounded by 2 countries. Both the United States and Mexico are in North America so they can both lay claim to the name.

If Mexico is so insistent on having waterways named after it, they should ask for the Gulf of California to be renamed the Gulf of Mexico because it is entirely in Mexico with no part of it being in the United States.

Or change it to Gulf of Baja California.

I’m not in favor of the name change, if a question on Jeopardy came up about it I wouldn’t know how to answer.

It's been awhile since my trip to Mexico but I seem to remember one of their areas to be named Baja California. Someone may correct me on this.

It was called the Gulf of Mexico before America as a nation even existed. It was first named around 1550. The name California also comes from the 1500s, possibly as early as 1510. The state of California was originally part of Mexico. The part that became the state of California was originally called Alta California. The lower part is Baja California. I think you are just trying to justify a name change when there is no justification.

For over a hundred years, way before Alaska became a state, Mount McKinley was named Mount McKinley. A previous Democratic president decided to rename it Mount Denali because McKinley was a Republican and they wanted to erase the names of Republicans. What was the justification of renaming it after it had that name for so many years? Our present president restored the name it was called for so many years.

Just tit for tat....
