Winter engine oil

Hi, it's getting cold up in these hills and I was wondering what grade engine oil everyone is useing in the winter months. I just changed the oil this fall, but it seemed a bit heavy for winter. 20w40 is what the dealer sold me. The help would be appreciated. stay warm Jim

never heard of 20w-40.. is it even diesel rated, that is an API rating of CJ-4 or CI-4, ect? (CJ-4 is the current API diesel engine oil rating)

Most people use a 15w-40 diesel rated (aka HDEO "heavy duty engine oil") oil. such as rotella, delo, delvac, ect.

I have recently switch to Rotella T6 5w-40 for our 2810 year round. I feel it is easier on the engine since most of the drivers of our 2810 fire it up and go to work... "let the engine warm up, whats that??" lol.

My 4510 has had a steady diet of Mystic 15-40 blend since 50 hours, anything thicker would be trouble here in NY, I also keep it garaged and throw a heating pad on the pan for 1/2 hour in really cold weather. Minimum five minute warm up here as well in all temps.

Sorry,:ashamed: it was rotella 15w40, typo. matter off fact it is rotella 15w40 diesel rated. the 5w40 sounds like a good idea in winter. I will do that. Thanks Jim

I run with the dealers blessings Rotella 15-40 or some other diesel rated oil equivalent. I am in Wisc, and my tractor is inside an unheated pole shed, so it doesn't see super cold outside weather. It always works fine in the tractors and trucks.

I use 15w-40 but my tractor is kept in a garage at 50 deg. If it was kept outside I'd use 5w-30 or 5w-40.
