I have a JD 990 (made by yanmar) and just today I've had an issue with it failing to start. Never had a problem before today. When it starts it starts fine - immediately fires up. When it doesn't start, I'll first get a little clunk like the starter engaged and then nothing - no cranking. On subsequent attempts I get nothing at all. Battery is fully charged - at 12.9V. I get the fuel gauge coming on when I turn the key. When I'm not getting anything (no clunk) I can't run the intake heater either with is interesting. When I do get the clunk I am able to run it. Seems like a starter problem but could be some safety interlock circuit failing too. Neither should stop me from running the intake heater. Tried hitting the starter with a mallet to see if it could be persuaded. Any ideas?

The first thing I'd recommend is to put an inspection camera down into the fuel tank, especially as you say that this is an intermittent fault.

Something is blocking diesel from entering the system.

Next could be the line or supply from the fuel filter to the injectors.

It doesn't crank so it isn't fuel related. Has to be starter, solenoid, safety interlock or some other electrical issue. Just not sure what.

Did you check the ground cable, where it connects to the chassis..??

Since the intake heater is also affected, I would suspect that the starter is ok, and the problem most likely is with a connection somewhere that has corrosion or intermittent connection. Sometimes heavy loads will branch off one of the big starter lugs, so make sure that they are clean and tight.
A gummed up safety switch isn't out of the question either; without a schematic it's sometimes difficult to locate them all for inspection though.

Yea I do have some power (fuel gauge comes on and oil pressure light comes on) so there's some kind of +12V and ground there, but I suppose it could be a bad connection. I noticed the oil pressure light seems dimmer than it should be. After I noticed that I just tried swapping the battery to another one I had lying around (even though the voltage seemed fine on the one that was in there) and that didn't make a difference. It seems like it has to be a bad connection somewhere.

A good test to isolate further; when you have a very dim oil light, run a jumper wire from the battery ground post to the wire that the sender hooks to. If it brightens up you have a ground problem, if it remains the same the problem is on the positive side. (assuming standard negative ground system)

Yea I think I'm going to replace the cables and ground bolt. I removed everything and the ground end of the negative cable had a lot of corrosion. The bolt and nut had a decent amount of corrosion on them as well.

Just because the battery shows voltage doesn't mean it can deliver 200 starting amps and hold it. Get a voltmeter and put it across the red power lead and the case of the starter. If you don't get at least 10 volts while the key is in the Start position, have your battery load checked at 200 amps for 11v terminal voltage and if that's ok, disassemble your electrical connections both hot and cold between the starter and the battery then reassemble, nice and tight. If you still can't get the voltage, replace the starting solenoid.

If you do get the voltage but the starter isn't turning, starter may need new brushes. But with what you said, it sounds to me like a battery sulphated up and in need of replacement.

It was a bad ground connection - removed the old ground cable, wirebrushed the area, then replaced the ground cable and bolt with new stuff and everything is great now.
