Being from Missouri, I'm guessing you don't have much hills to pull?
Kind of the "rule of thumb" for sizing implements to tractors is 5hp for every foot of width.
Personally, I don't subscribe to that rule. Too many variables. Like type of implement, terrain, soil types, pto vs non-pto powered, etc.
I'd say, if your mowing thinner grass, on mostly flat level ground, without many undulations or gopher mounds, if you don't have many trees to maneuver around, a 6ft rotary cutter will likely work just fine.
AND THEN I LOOKED UP THE SPECS ON YOUR TRACTOR
Dude, 40hp. 32 to the PTO. Your fine. Don't even stress it. You have the added benefit of the shuttle. Yeah, no worries.
I have a 45hp with a 6ft mower, and I mow some serious brush on steep hills without issue. Your tractor is about 6ft wide anyway, so if you want to cover your own tracks, get a 6ft mower. The ONLY reason I'd ever suggest getting a 5ft, is if you are trying to mow around trees and whatnot. But even then, I'd have a hard time (since I mow around trees too, with my 6ft, without issue.)
For some reason, I thought your tractor was only 25 or 30hp. Nope. You're good.
