Help! I have a Bobcat UTV 3400XL diesel with a Yanmar 3 cyl Diesel Engine model 3TNM72-APL Made by Polaris for Bobcat. After 2000 hours, the head gasket is blown. Rather than trying to fix that (engine must be pulled) I can get a complete new old stock engine for reasonable price. However the model of that new old stock engine is 3TNM72-APB. Does anyone know the difference between a 3TNM72- APL and 3TNM72-APB engine model? I have called Yanmar engine several times, they never return my calls.

Mr. Scientist. :) You have done your homework in an excellent way. The ending of L vs. B could be the air intake is a little different or the exhaust is different or the thermostart system is different. Typically nothing much to worry about.

IF you do find the slightest of all differences, you can take the original L parts and swap to the B designated engine.

The good part is, it ends in -AP_ So it's within a certain customer application for use.

Thanks BMaverick !

You are absolutely correct.

Not giving up I amazingly and finally got a name and # of a super nice and willing to help Yanmar parts rep . He sent me the complete illustrated parts list for the dash APL and dash APB engines. The main difference is the APB has an engine oil cooler tied into the coolant pump and a different oil pan. Actually a better engine, worst case scenario I swap oil pans, the entire engine block part #'s between the two models are exactly the same so you nailed it there. Much appreciated.

Just as a word of caution; Your old engine had a preset idle speed of 1175 RPM's. The new one is preset at 1400 RPM's. If your UTV has a centrifugal clutch like most UTV's and can start in gear it may take off immediately.
So be sure to adjust the idle speed down to a maximum of 1175 RPM's.

Good advise Gjamtrac - I will check that for sure and keep the unit in neutral on the first start.
