I have no illusions that Yanmar and my dealer made a little profit off this kit sale, at least I didn't get dinged for labor too! I would have liked to cobble together my own kit from cheaper parts but I just wasn't comfortable. My only other hydraulics experience was replacing a chaffed snow plow hose and I was worried about jeopardizing my tractor's warranty or worse. Do any of you remember reading about the John Deere owner who got his hydraulic lines crossed in a mishap, the engine wouldn't start because the hydraulic pumps were now put a load on it, the dealer couldn't figure it out, a whole new engine was ordered, installed, and that new one wouldn't start either because the hydraulic lines were still crossed? Well, I remember reading about it and I didn't want to be that guy too. :confused2:
The extra downtime involved to fabricate and fit the parts was another issue. I needed the tractor to plow snow on a moments notice, and since I am neither a pro mechanic or fabricator it takes me a lot longer to figure out and do things. Due to my job my only shot at working on this stuff is on weekends. I am really happy the weather cooperated and I was able to fit the install into one weekend, the kit and the instructions helped with that.
I know JJ's comments are well intended and he is extremely helpful with DIY kits and troubleshooting hydraulic issues. I've read a few of JJ's posts, I don't yet understand most of the technical jargon, but some day I hope to. This kit installation was a good exercise for me, I did learn a lot and the factory instructions and parts were a good safety net to prevent me from screwing up the tractor. If and when I add any auxiliary remotes, or a loader third function, I will very much consider cheaper alternatives and feel more confident about it now that I have this experience under my belt.
FYI, I paid for the kit with some inheritance from my Dad that I've been sitting on for the last 5 years or so. My father was never good with money. I mean...really not good with money...I'm surprised he had any left over, and what was left had to be split between 6 kids. Everything being said and done, I think he would have approved how I chose to spend his money.
In any event, if you get done reading about my rear remotes kit installation and come away thinking Yanmar put together a quality kit and that I wasn't a complete idiot at installing it, then great. If the knowledge is helpful to you to install your own kit, either from Yanmar or from alternative cheaper parts of your own choosing, I'm fully supportive of that too.
