An enclosed trailer has a 2.1 liter, 21KW Yanmar powered Stamford generator. Diesel fueled. The flapper on the exhaust pipe lifted in some manner and let rain water enter and get in the engine. It is a 2006 unit but only about 100 hours. Not sure how long the water was in but perhaps over the winter. A fellow tried to start it without success, noticed the water issue and then drained the engine oil. Did not service it after or try to restart it.
Question, he wants to sell it. Odds that a push rod or other components could be bent because of the water infiltration and attempted start? Would be potentially interested but do not want to buy a pig in the poke. Any thoughts on way to check for internal damage, things bent or rusted? Thanks

A pig in a poke describes it.

There is no way of knowing how much water was in it when he tried to start it. Odds are that it hydrolocked, as he "tried to start it", and presumably couldn't. So something stopped it. Damage could be anything from nothing up to a major overhaul with a new crankshaft, con rods, pistons, liners, and head. At a minimum, pulling the injectors, inspecting the cylinders heads, and seeing if it can be spun up by hand without the injectors in (gently!). If that goes ok, a check of the valves and camshaft is in order, clearance, etc. Regardless, I would suggest that you will need to get pretty far into the engine before you know if it is ok.

I do think that flappers on generator exhausts instead of J or U shaped exhausts is an unfortunate, but common design choice. Just asking for rainwater intrusion.

All the best,

Peter

What is the Yanmar engine model number? It would be something that sounds like 3TNE100 or 4TNV88 or something like that.
