I have a YM155D that has had a rear axle seal for quite a while. I don't use the tractor much and if i park it with that side up it wouldn't leak too bad. But with the virus thing and needing the tractor to get things done i figured it was time to fix that problem with a few other things.
It is a little more involved than most axle seals as the whole axle housing has to come of transmission and the axle removed from the inside out so to speak.
I ordered up the parts from Hoye and the parts got here quickly. I had the rear assy torn apart and proceeded to install the seal. It is a special seal that incorporates a shim into it. I installed it using a flat block of wood and got it installed flush with housing and everything back together. I spun the axle a few times as i installed the housing back together and the following day spun it a few more times as i putting the rest of the tractor together. I kept checking for leaks. Then after about an hour the second day it started leaking again. Only this time worse. I called Hoye on Monday and verified maybe i had installed the seal wrong by using a flat block and i should have used a socket or pipe the correct diameter to install it. So I ordered another seal.
I just got done yesterday installing the new seal and within a couple hours it too is now leaking. This last time i was meticulous about installing it. I had the perfect size socket that only touched the outer edges of the seal as i tapped it into place. I made sure the axle shaft was perpendicular the the seal and assy as it too was installed. Am i missing something here?
I am reluctant to order another seal in fear that i would only have the same problem again. I am wondering if maybe i should try to get just a standard type shaft seal but questioning how to find out correct sizing to buy?
Any help would be appreciated. I am stumped.
I have included some pictures to better show my problem.
Picture 1 is of my tractor put back together but leaking.
Picture 2 is of my tractor torn a part.
Picture 3 is of the manual and #14 is the sleeve that is incorporated into the new style oil seal #15.

P.S. I also cleaned and buffed the axle shaft with some scotchbrite to be sure it was clean and smooth before installing

looking at your second picture it would seem your axle shaft has a pretty good groove worn in it. If so, not likely to seal. I am not familiar with the new seal that is to take the place of the original sleeve. Wondering if a speedi sleeve could be used with it or maybe a different seal to fit the speedi sleeve like this one? SKF

Thanks Winston. The Axle shaft really does not have a groove worked into it. And the newer style seals have kind of a speedi seal built into them. I have it all torn a part now, again. So i am taking measurements to see if i can find a regular style seal to work for me?

Wow, when I click to enlarge the picture there is a gold colored area that is really misleading.

Yes the picture is awful and the shaft is filthy in that picture. Here is another picture of the shaft cleaned up a bit. To the right of the pointer is the bearing surface and to the left of the pointer is the seal surface.

Yes, looks good. I was fooled by first picture.

I was on board with Winston initially on the axle surface. It does look better in that picture. I would take a measurement of your axle and your new seal and see how they compare. Options would be to get a seal that matches or find a wear sleeve to go over the axle. If you put the new seal in and it still leaks then you have your answer on if you axle has a wear spot.

I took the axle shaft in and had it checked for being bent. It is not bent and runs out true and round. It was a question that had been asked by the guy where i bought the latest seal from. I was just assuming that the axle was straight. Now i know for sure that it is.
I plan to get it all back together again this weekend.

Got it done today using a seal designed for the shaft and housing diameter. For future reference and others who may need to know i used a N**A seal #17677 SKF seal. I think it was listed to be used on a transfer case output shaft of something? I hope it holds up and lasts for a while. Thanks to all for the support and advice.
