On your YM276 the battery ground cable does not connect directly to the frame of the tractor.
When you disconnect it to clean the connections you will see that the ground cable connects to the pan
(# 37) the battery sits in.
The pan is bolted to the frame and this is what actually creates the grounding.
You should remove one of those bolts (#53) and sand the rust and paint off to be sure you are getting a good ground connection.

Thank you everyone! Sounds like I need to be more highly suspicious of that battery.

I think I’ll plan on going up there with a fresh 850cca battery next time, also clean cable connections, check my ground, and test the starter directly with some jumpers to rule out the cables themselves being bad on the inside.

I’ll follow up and let you all know what came of it or if nothing worked we need to keep digging.

Thanks again! Ryan

If the Battery connections on the cables have been replaced I've seen lose/Dirty connections on them countless of times. That shop can test or should test the CCA. or Amps. that you can't with just a V-meter. Amps=Volts. Which I use the highest CCA battery that would fit in the tray. 850 from Walmart. I used a 550 for Yrs. and was glad to finally see it go in the trash!! Charged it up before use all the time.
Thanks… I did get a new 850cca ever start max group 65 from Walmart for it a few years back it seemed to work nice but maybe hasn’t lasted as long as I wanted it to.

Has anyone been able to fit a bigger battery in it or found something with more CCA? Open to recommendations on what to buy and head up with next time I go.

Sounds like the battery needs replacing. The auto store guy doesn't know what he's doing.

It takes time and a load tester to check a battery for the ability to provide a lot of current needed for starting. There are testing shortcuts. but they still take a full work day or more. Optima battery company requires a 12 hour load test for warranty claims. I think that's excessive, but on the right track.

Try this: take the cables off the battery and charge it at some moderate rate for overnight.
Then disconnect the charger, let the battery just sit there disconnected for an hour and then measure the battery voltage. It should be in the 12.7 to 13 volt range.

Now just leave it there still disconnected and let it sit for at least overnight or better yet for a day. Then measure the voltage again. It will drop some...but not much. Maybe 0.2 volts is typical for an older battery. New ones drop little if any. .... So if it was reading 12.7 after charging and sitting that hour, it should still be above 12.5 after sitting a day.

If it dropped down to 12.4 or below after 12 to 24 hours, the battery is not reliable for starting. It's still good as a 12 volt source for lights and such, but not for starting
luck,
rScotty

BTW, congrats on the starter brush rebuild. Nice to see someone doing it, Be sure to lightly sand the commutator and remove any carbon between the commutations.
And take the solenoid apart and clean those big contacts inside. That is often the problem with starting.
In order, troubleshooting goes: CABLES, BATTERY, SOLENOID, IGNITION. SWITCH, STARTER MOTOR.
Thanks for this. I’ll head up with a new battery and see what she does.

And yeah the starter wasn’t to bad at all. I guess my philosophy on any parts has always been it’s not broke until I’ve taken it apart, inspected it, cleaned it, and put it back together again… I win some I and lose some but it’s always a good adventure.

Given that clamping the charger on the battery posts works, I think that taking a battery to a parts store to be tested on a load tester is the thing to do at this point. Good luck!

All the best,

Peter
Also forgot to answer your last question. I’m in Eagle, Idaho. The tractor lives at our cabin in the small mountain town of Cascade Idaho an hour or so north of me.

Group 24F is taller 750CCA and peak 975CCA. You would need to ensure the cables reach. This is what I have in my YM2610 right now.

Ideally, you need to bring the battery back for any warranty issues. The group-65 is very pricey to replace. If outside of warranty, you would need a battery recharger capable of reconditioning like this one,
And it's on sale this entire weekend!

I've restores countless vehicle batteries with this device and saved several Lithium power tool battery packs with it too. When the battery packs don't take a charge at all, I toss this on for an hour at 2A. Then transfer over to the normal battery pack charger and it works.

Thanks! I think that is gorgeous country. A location often helps folks here better answer questions. You can put it in your profile for the future, too.

I've been known to upgrade battery cables to heavier duty ones with better (heavier gauge, larger) lugs, with star washers on the tractor ground for better contact. Starters draw enormous amounts of current, and every little thing that you do to reduce the resistance in the wiring helps. For me, if I ever have vehicle starting issues that aren't a dead battery, the positive cable and ground cable both get upgraded as step one.

Despite Japan's snowy north, I do sometimes wonder if Yanmar generally assumed that its tractors would be used in warmer weather.

All the best,

Peter
