Well, the time has finally come.

I knocked a couple of zerks off the hoe. I noticed it, but ignored it until the next greasing was due, which is before the next time I use it.

I went down to HF and got an assortment of American-sizes of zerks, and an assortment of metric sizes, so I think I have that base covered.

The question is do I use pipe dope on the threads when putting the new one in, or does it go in bare?

I have always used pipe dope on all types of grease fittings straight and tapered thread and never had a problem, they tend to go in better and if they break off there easy to remove.
The only exception is SS to SS in food plants I use Never Seize.

Personally, I can't see any advantage in using pipe dope to install a threaded grease zerk. You are not going to get any better thread lubrication than is already present in the grease and it's unlikely anything additional like pipe dope can improve on the presents of grease to stop any potential for seizing of threads.
