Tractor
Zetor 5745
Hi everyone,
I’ve just been gifted a Zetor. It’s my first tractor, I have a lot of questions hopefully here’s the right spot for them!

The tractors very difficult to start and needs a jump every time. There’s loose wires everywhere so I intend on getting a new loom and battery. Once running it’s great, no smoke and drives well.

Any tips on what I should try to have her starting easier?

My main uses for the tractor will be carting logs and rocking my driveway.

I want to get a loader attachment, do I need on specific for this tractor? Is it even possible?

I’d also like a jib for the back. I imagine those are pretty standard connections for all tractors?

Thank you

Does your unit have glow plugs.??
Incase u don’t know, they’ll be real close to the injectors, screwed into the head and have an electrical connection going to each one..
U have to MAKE SURE THEY WORK..
The next thing to check, in my book, would be the fuel supply TO the main injection pump..
The supply pump, bolted to the side of the main injection pump, has 2 valves in it.. they wear out their seats and allow fuel to back feed to the fuel tank..which will take a lot of cranking to get the fuel back up to the inj pump..
The supply pump should have a HAND PRIMER on it..
Next time u go to start the machine, before u try to start it, pump the hand primer 10-15x or until u feel it getting hard, THEN TURN THE KEY and see if that helps.. if it starts right up, u know u have a “back-bleed” problem..
It could be the supply pump needing rebuilding and/or rubber lines needing replacing..(sucking air)..
Once u get it started, if it smokes, the next least expensive thing would be a compression check..& if it checks over 300 psi, it’s time to get the injectors checked/overhauled..
Good luck and let us know how you make out..

A Zetor engine in good condition should start very easily, it might have a cold start button on the injection pump but that is only needed in very low temperature, have a tractor with this engine here and i have started it in -20 Celsius with absolutely no preheat, just on pure compression, mine does not have any cold start equipment. But does the starter sound OK? The solenoid can be an issue, check that the solenoid doesn't heat up, if it does it's bad.

And as mentioned, replace all fuel hoses even if they look to be in good shape. It has a licensed Bosch feeder pump so parts should be easy to get. The injection pump is not engine lubricated so it must be serviced, it requires ordinary engine oil, some have one oil fill for the pump and one for the regulator at the back of the pump.

Hi Tom. I would suggest if it needs a jump every time, that it might be cured when you replace the battery. If you've tested your battery, it's sized right, and your confident in it, then you can take a set of booster cables from the battery right to the starter. If it starts easier (turns over faster), then you know it's a wiring/corrosion issue.

If it is turning over fast, and just wears the battery down each time, then I would lean more towards the other answers above.

As for the loader question - having retrofitted another loader onto mine, I can say that it may not be worth it on an older tractor like this. I'm not sure I'd do it again, although I'm super happy to have the loader. I would suggest finding one from a similar model, or buying a different tractor. They aren't super generic from what I've seen.

You are correct a jib, or 3ph mounted forklift, or rear bucket is much more universal.
