Some with a front mounted blade have reported that the blade tends to dig in on softer soil, gravel drives, and such even with the skid shoes down. The best fix I've heard is putting something less agressive over the cutting edge, like a section of pipe.

Mornin Chuck,
Seems funny talkin about snow in July, in fact when I first saw this thread it was an old thread that someone reactivated ! ;)

Anyway, good post Chuck, yes a section of pipe welded to the bottom cutting edge of a front mounted blade most certainly does work ! Before the ground is totally frozen it prevents the blade from ruining your lawn and or driveway !!! :)

I bought a used 5' blade for $150. I already had it once the snow came, so I used it. Pretty effective also. For heavier snow, the FEL helps a lot.

Roy,
You are not far from me. What about the snow we got last year...or should I say sleet, hail, snow, rain mix. That was definitely an FEL workout.

You know it!!!!
In fact, I'd left my rear blade out by the shed behind the house. It wasn't accessible during that mess, so I did all the clean up with the FEL.
It took longer with the FEL, and there was a fair amount of gravel on the grass when I was done (more then if I'd used the blade).

That was one of the few times I was nervous when I was on the paved road (while cleaning out the head of my drive and driving to clean up a neighbor's drive) since the road was pretty slick. That's also one of the few times I wish I had chains.

Scott,

I have a clamp on snowplow blade for my FEL. regarding Chuck's comment on the "float" that is how I had planned on plowing my driveway. It's about 200' and is paved. will the blade dig into the pavement or was that for gravel drivesways??

Roy; it's not the amount of snow but the depth of the drift that counts. The drifted snow can be very hard and solid and does not like to be moved. As the winter progresses and the side banks get higher the drifted snow gets deeper every time it blows.

Thats what i'm talking about , On a windy day in january my 1/4 mile driveway will take out a foot of snow 3 times a day , Even when it's not snowed for 24 hours , We are flat as a pancake here on big farming country and wiyh maybe 10 miles without a tree or any kind of obstruction , My kid can ride his quad on top of fresh snow 1 ft deep without making a mark , If things get serious i get out my secret weapon ?

No this is exactly the time to talk about winter stuff. First of all it helps to forget the heat. Secondly all the winter time implements should be on sale now.
