I notice that majority of TBN'rs have the huskee 22Ton. Anyone have Yardman, Cub Cadet or Troy-Built? I like lowes and the Depot- zero interest/payments for one year!!!!

I too don't split in the single digits but do enjoy splitting when temps are in the 30's. I guess I developed a desire to cut my next years wood in the winter since growing up and splitting with my dad in the summer heat brings back memorys I care not to relive. I also enjoy getting out and getting some exercise during the winter months.

I only have experience with 3 log splitters:

My dads with a 20 HP onan electric start propane engine which had no troubles in the cold.

The neighbors which will not start when cold.

Mine which does start but when I tried with the pump engaged, it pulled very hard. In fact, with the engine at full throttle it killed the engine when I quickly engaged the pump. I then slowly engaged the pump and I could hear the engine groan and load up almost to the point killing the engine. Now I let the engine warm up. This is obviously due to the thick hydraulic oil because once warm it is great. I am guessing your oil is thinner.

Here is a picture of my dads unit that includes a 4000 watt generator and overhead lights. This thing he built himself and has a hydraulic cylinder that allows the wheels to raise and lower the I-beam to the ground. I put many hours on this thing. Notice the fuel thank that will last two years.

I love your dads, Mad Max would be proud!

Cade, i have a YardMachines (MTD) 27 ton splitter from The Depot. I bought it during a 10% off sale...... it was somewhere around $1200 after the discount (a few years ago). It has the Honda engine, and has run flawlessly. I'm VERY impressed with it.... it has literally split everything i've set on it, including some really stringy, gnarly, big elm. It can split horizontally or vertically.... though i always use it vertically. Only change i've made to it is a steel "shelf" on the far side for resting the bigger stuff on so i'm not picking every piece up several times. Admittedly..... its not as nicely made as the "pro" splitters like the Timberwolf or Iron & Oak..... but it was also a fraction of the price. I'd guess i have six or seven seasons worth of wood through mine (6-7 cord per year).

I now own 2 Speeco log splitters, one at my Mom's in the mountains of Tennessee and one here in Denver. I can't say enough great things about this company and the people that work there. I had a warranty issue on my second one, they took care of it quickly and made sure I was well taken care of throughout the whole process, I can't thank them enough. I will continue to buy Speeco products in the future and recommend them highly, glad to see a company like this in business and very impressed how they take care of their customers...
*Also - the 4 way wedge works well on softer wood, I did have to weld a piece of rebar on the back side of the L angle to reinforce it, I bent it a few times on the upstroke when a big chunk of wood would get stuck on it. Don't try and split hardwood with it though, the 35 ton ram will do it but you'll get the wedge stuck in the wood....

Actually, I went through this same process last fall and ended up with a Troy-Bilt 26ton splitter with a Honda engine.
It runs for hours on a tank of gas, starts easy every time, and offers vert/horiz splitting.

Perhaps best of all, we bought it on Lowes 18 month "same as cash" promotion.

As far as I'm concerned, buying on interest-free credit is better than paying cash, 'cause my hard-earned money is still earning interest in my acount.

Last winter we split in 10 degree weather and it started as easy as this summer.

Multigrade synthetic motor oil and synthetic hydraulic fluid seemed to be part of the reason, the Honda motor the rest.

FWIW, I have never seen or used any splitter that had belts in my something like 43 years of wood splitting.
