The Adapter Saga Continues

In all honesty, In this particular situation, you make a very good point. For you see. I have no other implements (at this time) that would require the PTO except the afore mentioned backhoe.
So, I guess I really Don't need to remove the adapter. Except for the fact that it has now become a quest.

I have the PERFECT reason / argument for the use / requirement of a PTO pump.
My JD 950 came with it and it has no rear hydraulic connections. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
I suppose I could always trade !!! Hmmmm !!!!

Mark, I have to wonder if the application of heat to the adapter will help. As these things become a real challenge we would all love to see you triumph over the adapter.

Ahhh a picture is worth a thousand words. If its as loose as you say try EdKing's advice and put a gear puller on it. If there is debris in the groove at worst you'll just markup the shaft or adapter a little. As far as heat goes be very carfull of the shaft seal, a solution to one problem could lead to a bigger one /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif.

Have you had this adapter off in the past? Or is this the first time you've tried to remove it?

This is the first time. I have only owned the tractor / backhoe for 1 year and just recently got brave enough to remove the backhoe.
The local dealer where I bought the tractor had installed a new clutch just before I found it and bought it, which meant that they had to remove the backhoe in order to split the tractor. In fact it was in his shop that I first saw the JD 950 and it was split then.
Not knowing much at all about the path of the PTO shaft through and into the tractor housing. I don't know whether or not the adapter would have had to come off, in order to split the tractor or did they do as I did and just remove the pump shaft from the adapter, leaving the adapter attached to the tractor.
Out of curiosity, the next time I am over there, I will go down to the repair shop and talk to the service tech that is there, for he is the man that did the new clutch installation and such.

Whatever it is that is not allowing the adapter to slide off has some strength to it. I am 6'2' and 230 lbs and with me applying enough strength to flex a heavy 3' wrecking bar, the adapter will not budge. I also don't want to apply to much force back on the rear end housing while prying against it.
I am going to have to make sure that I clean everything real good and look for a possible pin, I haven't seen one but it is worth another look.

Then there's still something in there holding it on.....no other holes? Somewhere a roll pin has been driven in?

Of course a good fit on a roll pin and it wouldn't slide back 1/8" usually.
