Rear Finish Mower My Woods RM48 blades fall off.

Hello Fred,

I thought I would mention this as a possibility
as you are essentially a captive audience with
to this mower.

You might want to consider mounting a reversing gearbox
connected to the gear box for the mower.

It would solve all your issues the first time with the proper
rotation allowing you to maintain the mowers current rotation.

Blades fall off up to this point reminds me of a local news story a couple of years ago. Seems like this lady was driving down the road in her car and all of a sudden her head got cut clean off. A blade got slung off a bush hog and just happened to head her way, no pun intended.

U sure they are going to continue to "fall"?

Thanks leonz,
That would be a perfect, although expensive idea, I have seen such reversing gearboxes mentioned in other threads. My mower doesn't have a gearbox. Instead it has a series of 6 pullies all wrapped up in one 124 inch v-belt. The Woods manuals (available free online at Woods Equipment Company - Manuals ) show the proper method of installing it, including a 1/4 twist in two different sections of the belt and a full twist in another section. I didn't invent it and hope I don't lose the manual.
NOW THE GOOD NEWS.
I went out and mowed my lawn this afternoon, even hitting a few ant hills, and all three blades stayed on and stayed tight. It looks like the combination of blue loctite, a 15/16 socket on an 18 inch power handle and a 3 pound maul did the trick. If, at some later date a blade comes loose, I'll resort to using red loctite.

If all else fails, get a bigger hammer.

Thank you for you help.
Fred

Thank you to everybody who sat with me through my dilemma and offered well thoughtout advice.
It looks like the blue loctite and a extreme tightening did the trick. I mowed my lawn and reduced several ant hills to puffs of dust and all three blades stayed tight. So now we know for future mower problems.
Again, thank you.

Hello Fred,

I did not realise that you used a pulley arrangement.

Do you have a large drive V belt pulley attached to
the rear PTO stub using a pair of smaller pulleys to
route the belts at a 90 degree angle back to approach
the first mower pulley?

We had this arrangement on our 1969-70 IH Cub LowBoy
with a belly mounted 3 spindled six foot mower deck.

There was a cyclist here in Nova Scotia, a few years back, travelling on a divided highway which consisted of three lanes in each direction, separated by a grassy median, probably 60 feet wide. He was cycling for his health and probably thought he'd live forever. Well the driver of a car on the other side of the median lost control and left the highway, barrelling through the tall grass of the median. His car turned sideways, flipped and became airborn, landing directly on top of the hapless cyclist. The car and bicycle were both write-offs, as was the cyclist. The car's driver walked away.
Funny how things happen. And sometimes there's no rhyme or reason to any of it. I guess that, like the woman in your story, the cyclist, in mine, had just run out of time.
Live as long as you can and make the best of it.

Hi leonz,

No I have a drive shaft connecting my PTO to the axle of the mower's main pully.

Originally my Kubota had a belly mower with the setup you're describing. I found it to complicated and time consuming to put it on and take it off when I wanted to do different chores with the tractor. The mower was raised and lowered by the 3pth and if I had a furrow plow on the hitch, plowing the garden, the mower would lower when I put the plow down. Obviously that's not good for the mower in a freshly turned field. So I opted for a 3pth mounted finish mower. Too bad I got the one I now have. Hopefully it won't give me too much more trouble.

If you go to Woods Equipment Company - Manuals and select "Mowers - Rear Mount Finish Mowers" and then choose the RM48KB-1, RM48KB/E-1, you can scroll down through all my future mowing problems.

Thanks for the interest and your help.
