3-pt Hitch Log Splitter or Gas standalone?

Gives another excuse to add rear remotes to the tractor. Many attachments available if you have rear remotes!

When I ordered one of these powerhorse uints I didn't have the rear remotes. I looked into the price and found I could get the power beyond block for 75 bucks. I bought that and 2 24in hoses and quick connects. So while i don't have rear remotes with valves I have power beyond.

The shipping on the unit was a bit under 100 bucks and the hoses and fittings at tractor supply were about 60 bucks.
So in the end, for me I found it to be an excellent investment, but your milage may vary....

Cycle time for me from one end to the other is about 7 seconds running the tractor at 1200 rpm. Higher idle will make it faster but I don't want the noise....

Hi Chris,

I did consider the power beyond route, and I do understand the added value for 3-pt implements including TNT adjustments, but.....

After agonizing about the choice, mostly with the maintainence of a small gas engine weighing on my mind, as I said, JJ mathemagically proved for me that with the low output of the hydraulics of my Kubota B2320, it would most likely have a glacial cycle time.

We also weighed the always welcome opportunity to use Lowes' money for a year interest-free, which I love to take advantage of, I think that finally sold me on the Troy-Bilt, that, and the fact that we had rented the same model from the local family-owned rental store, and liked it- also the owners of the rental place gave it high marks for reliabilty despite (ab)use by stupid renters (like me, I guess).

So far we've made do with a Homelite Electric log splitter. When we bought we thought we'd be bringing it back after a few tries but boy were we surprised. It says 10" dis. max but they've split 2' dia. stuff. I run the controls, bad back, wife and son put the wood on it. It's the same as the Ryobi just a different color. We're going to give it a workout soon with some 30" Red Oak and see what happens, might have to borrow my brother custom made splitter.

BTW: So far it's been worth every penny :laughing:

Recently my wife bought a used Kuhn disc mower conditioner and the brothers she bought it from had one these, an Iron and Oak brand commercial splitter. I didn't see it run but it looked like it was built like a tank. The hydraulically adjustable 4-way wedge and log lift was sweet. I think they said they paid close to $6K for it and bought direct from the factory.

I don't think there is a wrong answer to this 3pt vs standalone splitter question. It seems like the standalone is right for you.... and as you've seen there are + and - to both types. For me the downside of the 3pt is not having the loader close to put the splits into. I'm looking for a trailer with a bit longer tongue so it will fall just behind the splitter. Also different people put different weight on individual factors. For me, small size for storage, no additional engine to maintain weighed higher than speed, but I also only split 2 to 3 cords a year.

Finally got a splitter. I am not sure if I will miss the maul or not after over 50 years of swinging it. But it is definately time. There was lots of good info on this thread that helped me. Thank you all. Found a 22 ton 6 year old Huskee on CR. Doesn't look used too badly and runs good. It is still on my pick-up. Tomorrow I will figure a way to unload it.

That is what my wife said. No elm any more. It is pretty much gone now. Nice shade trees. I tried to avoid it for firewood.

Got it off and it still works. Now I want to build a splitting rack or table. Any suggestions for a good size. How deep is useful w/o getting in the way on the work side? Would you make the far side deeper?
