Tiller General tiller opinions, questions

I have a 02 King Kutter 60" and I have been very pleased with it. Same issue with the paint but just keep it covered. Just finished tilling my neighbors yard for a new lawn this morning. I wish I had a Harley rake, there is probably 2 days of hand raking to get the grass clumps out.

Just like the other guys, I had a 40" tiller than covered my tracks on my B7100, but when I went to the B2710, my outside tracks were 54" so I had to offset the tiller to cover the tracks on one side. I would have preferred a wider tiller to cover the tracks; just couldn't see spending the money for another tiller.

A day late and a dollar short.......

A good way to eliminate the grass clumps before tilling even starts is to set the depth "shoes" on the tiller where it will only cut an inch (or less) deep. Till lightly that way. Then take a box blade and collect up all the grass and roots. REmove them from the yard, THEN till to desired depth. You'll get a MUCH better seed bed that way.

I traded for a 58" Grey Market. Though I had got a deal, yeah right. I wound installing a new main tube and tynes that have flanges that takes KK "L" style tynes that are fastened with two bolt to a flange. I also made new pulling lugs, alot of new iron. I also had to buy a new PTO shaft and slip clutch. All total I have more into it than a new 60" KK. Go with a new KK OR the CCM and don't waste your time with those cheaper Grey Market tillers that have a single bolt holding the tines. The bolts break and the tines fall out. Just not worth the pain. Been There, Done That. bjr

Thanks Farm, I'll try that. I have a 15,000 sq ft lawn to do next week and it has me scared. I guess I could get the clumps out after the scalp till with a lanscape rake and then do my deep till.

I was in the same position a few months ago, looking for a bargain tiller. I did all my research and called several dealers, and looked at the posts here for tiller feedback. I purchased a 72" King Kutter II at my local TSC for $1500. I put it on my 3830 Kubota and it has done a great job. I think that for the money they are hard to beat, this is a all gear drive tiller that weighs 780 lbs. The only fault that I have with the tiller and that has been reported on this forum many times is the lack of a quality paint job, but having said that I find no other faults at this time.

Saxman my '06 4330 Kubota says to not use a tiller bigger than 60". Now I understand that there is a bit of give and take there but don't you think that's a bit much? However if it's not under warranty and since rottery tillers really don't put a big strain on the tractor I would say your probably ok. Now a 3 bottom plow is out of the question :).

Dalhan, I looked at my manual and you are correct is says 60" max. I can't imagine why since the 3830 handles it well and does not load the engine as much as my rotary cutter. I will only use it for my large exsisting garden so I think I will be OK. It is really nice to take the wheel tracks out and not have to mess with offsets.

One way to deal with the grass clumps is to round-up first and wait for a good kill. May take to apps. Then plow it all under. Then till.

To find a tiller you might want to try Auctionzip.com for your state. Type in agricultural auctions and it will lead you to local farm auctions. I have been to 3 in the last 3 weeks, and there were tillers at all of 'em. Just be sure to look 'em over good before you buy.

Wow, I am in the same position, trying to find a tiller. They have the 48" tillers (unknown to me who manufactures them) at Rural King for $1200. I'm ready to pay that much, but I'm not sure about sizing. I've got a Kubota L3000, which is 30 HP and 60"-ish wide at the rear tires. Will I be sorry I bought a 48" tiller? Do you need your tiller to cover the width of your tires? If so, how big of a tiller will my L3000 power? This is for small/moderate gardening (maybe 1/3-1/2 acre).

I've got an L3000 and a 60" KK tiller. I wouldn't want a tiller much bigger. It will cover the tire tracks even with the tires set out and the tractor has plenty of power to run this size but the next size up might be a bit much.
