Those of you that already own a UTV are likely aware of all this....I'm no UTV expert....but I did promise a review of my initial ride on our Honda Pioneer. I got a golf-cart and a 4 wheeler to compare to....so this is all a bit new to me. Wrote this for another site....but thought I would share here too as some had expressed interest.

Got a few miles on the odo yesterday. Went over to my BIL's house and land. Three of us rode his trails to get his game camera chips....then drove over some Potlatch forest roads. The rear seats and doors on the Pioneer made this simple for the three of us to all ride in comfort....in a short wb machine. Nimble....smooth....nice fit.

Really a nice riding machine. We zipped along nicely on the trails and everyone remarked on the comfort of the ride....front and rear. Climbed up a rock-strewn hillside that also had some big roots and erosion-rut issues. Was surprised how effortlessly we traveled. Used 4WD a few times....but never used the front diff locker. Steers easily even without PS. Feels safe and secure with the 1/2 doors and roll cage. Feels like a good low center of gravity on the hills....nice and stable. Fairly nimble on any established trails....but it's not the machine to blaze lots of new trails....as you may do on a "wheeler". For my purposes....this is a great ride.

Later I went over to my land and rode my established trails. I have a tractor with a 5 foot rotary cutter.....and that is typically my minimum maintained trail size. I've been useing our golf cart on these trials. This Pioneer easily will fit on the trials my tractor makes. The Pioneer rides the trails with much less "jossling" around than the golf cart. Very smooth riding machine.....and we continued to remark how nice this was. Maybe were getting old?

A little louder than I expected, but the roof and windshield make it appear louder. Some heat comes up from the engine and will be welcome this fall / winter....but could prove excessive in the summer(?). Struggeled twice with the shift from REV to Fwd.....but I attributed it to a new machine. Sticky?

The 3 speed tranny with torque converter is the REAL DEAL! I really like this automotive type tranny and the way it shifts. NO belts to worry about. Seems very dependable and capable. I ran the speed up to the low 40's on one stretch....and this is fast enough. Cruising is more fun in the 30's.

Really liked the protection provided by the full glass windshield and the roof. Just lean-in and forward when encountering brush. A non-event. May have to remove the windshield in the summer months tho....or get a 1/2 windscreen for the summer to let some air thru. It had rained earlier in the morning.....so dust was a non-event. The roof is major nice.....lite rains proved no issue and the brush was no worry to my passengers: nice....and less to worry about when your the driver. I'd hate to put a stick in someones eye.

This was the ride(s) I wish I could have taken prior to my purchase (with a new model it's hard to be certain).....as it re-enforced my decision on this purchase. Nice, solid, well built, versatile machine. I'd buy it again.

Nice review.I am interested. We have had Honda in the past and they are bullet proof. We have been purchasing Yamaha the last ten years or so and have had great luck with them. Our local Honda dealer is a ########,lost my business many years ago,too bad I really like their machines.
Our Yamaha Rhino is used just about every day and has 3500 miles with no problems, just normal wear and tear and maintenance.

Well you knew this question was coming... how much did it set you back, if you don't mind? Don't feel obligated to answer of course.

This seems like the perfect compromise machine if you want some utility, and 4 seats without taking a limo through the woods.

The MSRP on a 4 seat machine is $11,599. and it's $9995 on the two seater....IIRC. Pretty good prices - compared to other similar machines....and the prices are on Honda's web site. (Plus tax and license.) That is the price I paid...plus the accessories were another $1100 or so....and I got a small discount on those. I will be adding some other accessories in time.

Already bought a double gun case with mounts on the ROPS and got a RR view mirror off Amazon. Got a rear fabric / clear curtain for the front cab....and will order canvas doors pretty soon. Considering a wiper.....but may not get the heater I was considering. ?? Enough heat off the engine for ice riding?? Maybe. :D

And.....here is what it looks like when you drive it into a bog in the back country. Took an hour-long hike in the rain (and a total of 3 hours work) to get a come-along and pull it out. Put a damper on a good day.

Getting stuck stinks, do you think it was the tires or lack of power to keep wheels spinning and the tires clean?

No lack of power.....I could spin all day without moving.

I pre ordered a camo 700 4. I have not been able to test one either and glad to read your review. How is the engine braking going down hill? I have a Honda rubicon and hardly ever need to use the brakes going down hill. Hope the Pioneer is the same. Uggg, and it is noisy??

As a GNCC racer and ATV owner for over 30 years here is my take on Honda ATV's/UTV's. If you want the lastest and greatest bells and whistles on an ATV you will most likely have to look elsewhere. If you want the most powerful and fastest atv, you will also have to look elsewhere. But if you are like me when it comes to your ATV and all you want is a reliable and competent machine that will start when you need it to start and work and run when you need it to run , then Honda is the way to go without a doubt.

However, as a GNCC racer, Where state of the art is a big advantage, Honda struggles in this department. Motor is too labor intensive and the suspension , well, sucks really. When it comes to woods racing it is hands down a KTM for me.

Oh and a Winch is almost manditory on a UTV. As Foggy 111 recently found out. :)

I do have a HEAVY DUTY "power puller" cast winch with 50 feet of 3/8" cable. It's a manually operated affair I bought in order to pull my CUT out if I ever get it stuck - again. :D I just left it back at my pole shed. Duh. ;)

I think the furnished tires will work just fine for most of my purposes. I'm not out looking for mud-holes or races. Mostly, I'm riding established trails - with other people around. The getting stuck day was an abnormality that took us into a wilderness area. I will be better equipped next time.

Drove the Pioneer more in the past days - after power-washing all the mud and clay off. Used it to pull a 6x8' flex-link, pasture drag over a half mile driveway.....never knew it was there. Checked game cameras, filled the bed with chain saw, limb saw, and implements for tree stand maintenance, and just did some cruising. 50 miles on now.....and I like the machine allot. I'm not sure that it is best at any one thing.....but it will perform a multitude of tasks in style......and it sure is a nice way to haul lots of people around in a short wheel base machine.

I keep sniffing out places to stow essential gear - so that I have it when needed. The rear seat foot-wells (under the folded-down seatbacks) have ample storage space for a tool bag(s) and tow rope....and when the seats are being used this gear will still fit in a space between the tail-gate and the seat-backs (if both seats are used). Under the front hood is a big space that I'm hoping will one day hold a nice sized plastic box full of seldom needed gear (first aid kit, light, duct tape, rope, yadda yadda). I also fill the glove box with often used items. I see some space over the windshield and below the roof that looks like prime area for stowage. Wishing the aftermarket guys would get busy!

Also, it fit very nicely on an aluminum trailer I already own (Aluma brand) with a fold down ramp. It's got a rubber tortion axel with a 3000 lb rating (?) - perfect. My trailer measures 5'2' wide by 120" long ---at the bed. These dimensions are nearly perfect for hauling this machine......and the trailer tire tracks follow my Grand Cherokee tracks....keeping my package nimble and easy to tow. I rigged up tie-down hooks and got 4 good rachet straps for a proper hold down to distant trails. Next time I'm bringing my HD winch along tho. ;)

I can't argue with that, I was just talking to a friend yesterday about how I have been wondering when KTM is going to come out with a side by side! Unfortunately, their not in the game now, so can't really compare them...unless of course your thinking of the Xbow with knobbies on it ;)

Glad to see another Pioneer owner. I like my machine allot....and it should serve our needs well.

One thing I could not take....was all that netting that Honda puts on the Pioneer. First thing I did was to remove it. I appreciate safety.....but that netting is waaay too much work for my needs.

I made a front 2" receiver mount so I can use the winch in the front or rear. I don't know if any companies offer them yet but should.
