For years, I understood that the transaxle on my mower was not serviceable. I have an 04 GT 5000, 25hp Kohler, 6-speed manual, 54" deck. Now that the tractor is getting along in years (and has served me extremely well), I'm looking more closely at maintenance. I'd like to change out the oil in the transaxle.
Upon inspection, it seems that there is a drain plug. And a fill plug (or at least an inspection plug). My guess is that I can change this stuff out just like the lower unit on an outboard motor - fill from the bottom 'till it comes out the top, then plug it up and roll.
Is that so? Has anyone done this? I've searched the forum and can't find much info.
Further research indicates that this manual tranny takes a 30-weight oil. That seems odd to me (why not 75/90 or some other gear lube?). Can anyone confirm or deny?
