How Do You Fill Your Diesel Tank

This sounds great. Where can I find a setup like this? The tank i can get but I'm interested in the pump hose, nozzle and trip.

I'd start with Craigslist. I just bought a Fill-Rite rotary hand pump with meter and filter for $60 that I plan on using on a 55 gallon drum for ethanol-free gas for my small engine equipment and boat. I had to replace the hose, filter, and I added my own auto shut-off nozzle. You could also try jmesales.com or Northern Tool. I got the 55 gallon drum (empty) for free from a local oil distributor. The auto shut-off nozzles are great, and work with the rotary hand pumps also. Just crank until it clicks and shuts off the fuel flow. No spills, and no lifting heavy cans.

for small application, I just use this syphon

Put the brass end in the jerrycan, other into your machine, shake a few times and the flow starts. Your jerrycan has to be above fuel tank for gravity/syphon to work

I have a 12 volt Fill-rite pump but to be honest it's overkill. It comes with the nozzle that shuts off once the fuel reaches the tip (just like the nozzle on gas station pumps). It's really designed to be used by someone who has equipment out in the field he needs to fill daily. There are other brands that are not as expensive that I would look into if I was to buy one now. I got the type that threads into the 2" port on a 55 gallon drum.

1*I got tired of the 5 gallon containers so I got a 13 gpm fill-rite pump 12 v model and two 55 gallon drums.

1*Did you know this pump is for filling these drums just as much as it is for filling your tractor ?

It's a little bit of up front money but once you get yourself a 55 gallon drum set up with a pump you'll not regret it. I prefer an electric pump over a hand crank because it's no different than filling up your car, once the tank is full it trips the nozzle so you don't have to keep track. Also since the nozzle is the shut off the diesel in the hose is not going to leak out when you remove it from the tank.
2*I also have mine on a home built wooden frame with wheels I got from Harbor Freight.
I also took a piece of 1/10" thick steel 1 1/2" wide and bent it into a circle so I can wrap it around the can. It has a bolt that connects the two ends together and clamps it to the drum. I have 4 single 5/16" chain links welded on it so I have an easy place to attach straps to it while on a trailer or in the back of the truck or to lift it out when full.

2* Why go to all this bother -what do you think your pump is for ?

3*if I had a pickup truck, vs a blazer, I might opt for a gas tank that fits in back of the pickup truck.
some are built in L shape. to fit under a tool box. this would be a good option for me.
4*I have been tempted to get a plastic 55 gallon drum, or perhaps a metal drum. and just strap it down onto a trailer and haul it into the gas station and fill it up. and then once back home.
5*use the FEL on tractor to move it off trailer and put some place. with a hand pump or 12 v pump on it
but after reading through regulations for Illinois
6* I am not sure if that is legal. and looking at fines.
I was more discouraged, about permanent gas tanks vs portable gas tanks for storage of gas and of diesel. and reading needing double wall tanks and if not double wall a catch basin and blah blah blah. my mind just went blank and gave up.
7*I would most likely be less discouraged if I understood the regulations better, and could set something up so I would not fear of going BOOM! after reading through "grounding wires" so you do not create a spark just from static electricity. with a permanent tank and filling a tractor up. has me on edge even more.

9*some tanks both for hauling back and forth between gas station and farm, and then some tanks to store the gas and diesel here on the farm.

3*The big fault with this idea is theft and Vandalism and the fact that you are always carrying the fuel aground with you .

8*Get the pump and you will thank your self over and over again .
9*See the blue drum in # 4 and the white drum in #5.

I went to northern tool and bought a 15 gallon can that has a squeeze pump handle on it. It also has 2 ball valves that turn on and off supply to a 10 ft hose. It works pretty well if you don't mind the work out of the hand.
Oh the only other bad thing is its kind of heavy in and out of the truck

10*Don't take the tank to get it filled take 4 5 gallon cans and put 3.75 gallons in each one so they won't be so heavy to handle when filling the 15 gallon tank.

Attached are photos of EAGLE/Red and JUSTRITE/Yellow steel, made in the USA, Type II fuel cans. They are both lifetime cans. You will NOT spill or drip due to the design of the cans. I prefer the JUSTRITE can due of the larger diameter metal filler and because the JUSTRITE filler bale works a little better for me.

These are self-venting cans. As it heats up during the day here in Florida both cans occasionally hiss a split second. (Vent desired by thread originator.)

I bought my two cans together from Amazon.com Free shipping over $25 and NO sales tax. Still expensive fuel cans but worth it for the quality. Order carefully....specify the filler inner diameter you prefer for your tasks. Red, Yellow, Green, Blue and maybe Puce paint available.

If you want five gallon capacity cans these are of the HIGHEST QUALITY.

I have used one of these American Wick SI-60 Hand Operated Siphon Pump - Plastic for about five years now. I think I payed about $1.95 or 2.95. Only a drop or two spilled. Put a couple of gloves on the engine hood to keep 5gall tank from scratching it. insert siphon, pump 5-6 times, watch diesel go into tank while doing ... nothing. Easy and cheap too

Hey... You took my idea... That's exactly what I do. Two gloves and the same siphon. I siphon down to about an inch left in the container then pour the rest in. Never have any issues. I even use the blue kero containers because I don't feel like spending money on the yellow one!

Yep, that's what i use. I think it is the Flo n Go asked about earlier in thread. I used the hand pump one time and quickly found better way.

I place the can on front loader as it fits perfectly in cradle like spot between pin and bucket. I then gently raise the bucket just high enough so that it become gravity feed into tank with one squeeze on handle pump.

I eventually will get more permanent and larger tank but this works for now.

bOnviously the diesel tank should go on a small trailer which can be transported to refill or to refill the tractor in the event of running out of fuel in the paddocks..lol
