Hey SR, that's why I was asking! Thanks for the feedback.

If I stick with what is suggested above by big bubba at a 6' cutter for the MX, really no point in moving from my 5' Landpride 2660 that I'm using now. That's only 20% more cut per pass and 263% more hp needed (6ft. cutter with MX5800). If I'm sticking with my 5' cutter, maybe I should rethink the whole idea of going from my 19 hp L2501 to a MX5800 with 50hp (pto hp numbers). Thanks to everyone for the reality check, definitely didn't see this coming. The loader lift is double and 3 pt. is significantly more for the MX vs. L2501. So I guess its go a lot bigger M6060 or 7060 or just stick with a MX4800 for the loader/3 pt. increase lift capacities.

I was wanting to stay away from a M series because most of the time it would be loader type work in the woods with the HST. Once or twice a year max I would cut the fields (3 different fields totaling 26 acres).

Do you use the 2660 with that L2501 successfully?
If so, while a ten-foot may be excessive, your particular use can may work fine with an MX5800 and a much larger cutter.
Some people see 50hp at the PTO and hear "ten foot" and cringe... but then they may be cutting substantially different stuff than you do. If you're happy with 19hp driving a five foot cutter (other than the time it takes)...

I think I use the 2660 cutter successfully with the L2501. It is a fuzz slower when the grass is really thick or when the brush is way overgrown. I'm was trying to take back portions that were neglected for years. I absolutely love the 2660 cutter, its a complete tank. I bought it several years before I got my L2501 from a guy in Iowa, he used it twice (my tractor is in the Missouri Ozarks). I used to own a Kubota M59 TLB in 2009 to 2011, but the cutter never got used on it. I do check my cutter slip clutches every year and take them apart.

The L2501 is a little misleading, the hp was measured at 2200 rpm to get right under the emissions cut off. So I'm going to a bigger tractor mainly for the loader and 3 pt, but still need to know my limitations on a rotary cutter. It looks like an 8' cutter is available from Landpride in the "medium duty" category. A 60% increase in cut width is worth doing, it's just a 20% increase didn't make any sense.

I run an 8' flail on my L4060. I have to go pretty slow doing a full cut in heavy grass. But here in Colorado we dont have much moisture or the resulting grass. It's usually thick towards the bottom of slopes & what not. Most of the time I'm speed limited by rough terrain as opposed to HP. But the HST means I can trivially adjust my speed to go as fast as HP will permit. With a bad back I'm a fan of going wide & slow. Smoother ride for me & my equipment.

Your mowing conditions might not be at all like mine though. I can easily imagine a L6060 not being enough for any reasonable pace with my flail in wetter climates with lots of thick grass. Thick grass takes a lot more HP than light or moderate brush, suprisingly.

I run a Landpride RCR1884 (84") with my MX5800. In very tall weedy pasture it barely even seems like it is working the engine. It has plenty of power for anything I mow.

On horse pasture we have 40 horsepower tractors mowing with that mower. Low horsepower requirements of multi spindles!

ChemE: perhaps. if you go that route, recommend loaded rear tires. I have a twin 8' hd cutter (3ph) & love it. twin does have it's advantages, far better than single 7' cutters.
personally still skeptical in your case, but could well pan out for you. you have a big purchase(s) ahead of you, best of luck.

Hi All,

I currently have a L2501 that I will be upgrading to a MX machine. Initially was going to get the MX4800 to stay away from a turbo. My concern was that if not used a lot a turbo would have problems like newer diesel trucks (the fuel is the lubricant), is this a problem with tractors also? I have 170 hrs on my 3 year old L2501.

Next question, is if I did go with a MX5200 or 5800 what is the largest rotary cutter I could use? Maybe a twin spindle 10 fter or larger. This would be grass hay fields as the guy who cuts my hay is not paying anything, so I may just cut it myself a couple times a year (26 acres of field).

Thanks

ChemE

FWIW, the MX series is being redesigned and the new models will likely be previewed at the September dealer's meeting. Know nothing about changes, etc.

I agree with Rob and Bubba. A 10' rough cut mower, even a pull behind model, is too big for a MX5800. I use a HD mounted 6' Woods BB720X with my L6060 (same engine as the 5800 but tuned to produce a bit more power) and it's often all it wants. You can probably get by with a twin spindle 8' pull behind model if you are in no great hurry and/or cut often.

If you're cutting the fields with a rotary cutter, I assume you're not trying to actually make hay from it, just keep the fields tidy. I'll avoid suggesting you get some self propelled mowers (grazing animals). Would a flail mower meet your needs? I think you can run quite a bit wider flail than a rotary cutter, and if you're mowing a couple times a year then you're unlikely to grow any brush that a flail couldn't cut.

agree. no brainer. esp w/dull cutters & heavy growth. can't have it all....imho many members are too ambitious w/under powered machines. now is the time when buying new to select the right machine for the task at hand. if you want an MX, get the 5800 w/a 6' heavy duty rotary 3ph
or step up to the M series that will expand rotary options. best regards

I bought a Mx5200 & find it has plenty of power

Reason I went 5200 & not 5800 is I assumed same engine stressed less will last longer

This coming from a guy who has always bought largest in a series with all bells & whistles

Don’t miss anything

Andy
