Well, one of my steering cylinders failed. Boy did it leave me high and dry but that is another story.

Got the machine home, and it appears that when I rebuilt my cylinders I missed a step and did not properly lock down the nut that holds the piston on. Now both are at the back end of the cylinder. I have tried to engage the nut with a longer shaft, but I guess it just spins. I am finding there is no room to get anything into the piston hole as the nut on the other side blocks access. I have tried to "bang" it out, banging the cylinder on some wood. But my pistons are pretty tignt.

Any final ideas before I take this down to the local Hydro shop?

Also, what to I do to keep the nut from coming off? Put some loctite blue on?

Any way you can get some compressed air behind it?

I had to rebuild two cylinders on my loader (one was bad) and I noticed both nuts were backed off considerably and were loose. Loctite is your friend for this stuff.

Can you wedge a piece of wood into the hole in the piston and there carefully pressurize the blind end port. If using air be very careful that you don't create a missile.

When you get the nut tight you could drill a hole thru it and drive in a roll pin, or Loctite would probably work.

Find a piece of rod or allthread smaller than the hole in the piston. Bend a hook in the end and pull the piston out.

Use red Loctite 271 and tighten the nut as tight as you can get it.

Punch lock it.

I just had this happen, I'll look for the thread later... Long wire with a 90* bend at the end, I think Flattening the end after it's bent over would work better. The "wire" I used was from those political signs that people put in their front yards. Pretty stout stuff... Go down where the piston was, and grab the back of the piston and pull out.

Correction, I used a threaded bar with a nut and washer to go down in past the piston and catch the lip of it. Man I'm getting forgetful! The thing I used is at the top with a half circle on it.

{edit} here my thread and what to do to not have it happen again (I hope): http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/...raulic-top-link-came-apart.html?highlight=top

I had one come off on my dipper stick on my backhoe. It was a pain to pull the piston out, the cylinder is a good 3 feet long. I ended up using a rod with a notch cut into it that once through the center hole in the piston I could catch the side and pull it out. I replaced the nuts with locking nuts, not the kind with nylon insert but the all metal kind. I think they call them stover lock nuts. Never had one come off so they are my go to lock nuts. Locktite should work but I wouldn't want to find out that the hydraulic fluid dissolved it.
