Oil & Fuel $4000 Repl. Cost for JD Compact Tractor Fuel Pump??

Warning to any other homeowners wanting to enjoy a utility tractor for use in the yard. I was just quoted nearly $4K for a replacement pump for a tractor with only 120 hours on it.

Am I loosing my mind or is this highway robbery? I can not afford this.

Tractor ran fine. Parked for the winter. Got in to do some work and refused to start. Discovered I lost fuel on the front injector (1 of 3) at the injector pump. Any suggestions of how to reasonably replace, rebuild or has anyone else lost fuel on an injector pump like this? HELP...

Where is the warranty?

Open the phone book and look for a local diesel pump rebuilder. Or go to a semi shop and ask them who they use.

That can't be true... that is probably more than the engine cost! I'd call another dealer, or question that one. But the other question is, with 125 hours, it is under warrentee.

No one has mentioned it but after sitting for the winter are you sure it's the pump or has it just lost its prime and you need to bleed the air out of the fuel system?

I'm not familiar with JD warranty whether it is covered or not but I think it should be.

I'd replace the fuel filter and try bleeding the system before I'd blame the pump. If it does turn out to be the pump I'd follow other advice her and look for a hydraulic shop that can rebuild it for you.

Before you remove the pump or buy a new one, be sure you actually have a problem with the old one. You say it won't start at all? If it lost fuel on the front cylinder and still has fuel at the other cylinders, it should still start but it would definitely have a miss. Do you get any smoke out of the exhaust when you crank it? Is the fuel shut-off solenoid working? Maybe a mouse or something chewed some wires over the winter. If you really do have fuel missing only on one cylinder, mmake sure the fitting that the fuel line attaches to in the top of the pump is tight. If that fitting is loose, It can make a misfire on that cylinder. If the pump really is bad, I would press the dealer to try and get some help from John Deere even if it is older than 2 years. With 125 hours, they might be willing to help. Good Luck!

Yes, you can call Deere and make a formal complaint. I did this when my previous tractor blew the front drive shaft. What usually happens is that your dealer checks your tractor to make sure you didn't do anything to cause the problem and then reports back to Deere. They may cover it.

If you have a good dealer then talk to him, they can help. That's why I buy from one guy I know and trust. When things like this happen they are priceless, my dealer was.
When I bought my last tractor I said, "make your money but be fair with me". He always has been.
Shopping for a tractor by price is one thing but if you don't know the dealer get an extended repair plan.

The injection pump is covered under the emission warranty if it is truly bad. The epa warranty is 5 years or several thousand hours. Check with your dealer. Hope things work out well.

May not be "right", but is probably "par".
Though if it gets fuel to the other cylinders I would be spending some effort bleeding that line.
