4110, 3510 oil filter warning!

I changed my 4110 oil last weekend and installed the new Mahindra filter I got from my dealer a few months ago.
I filled up with Rotella 15-40 HD oil.
The tractor sat all week and this morning I went and started it to do some chores.
When I got off the tractor right after starting I seen oil gushing from the filter all over the barn floor.
By the time I got the tractor shut off (about 5 seconds) I was looking at a 3 ft. wide puddle of nice clean Rotella oil, about
1 1/2 gallons worth.
(I did run the tractor after changing oil & filter last weekend with no leaks whatsoever.)
After my initial shock I removed the oil filter to see what went wrong
Here's what I found.
The original filter installed from new had a flat 3/16" wide gasket with a overall width of 2 3/4".
The filter from my dealer had a larger o-ring style gasket with a 1/8" wide ring and overall width of 2 7/8".
I noticed the differance when I installed the new filter but figured it should work fine.
The filter mount has a machined step back on the flat sealing surface, just the right overall width for the flat gasket filter.
But with the larger o-ring gasketed filter, at one spot, the ring pushed past the machined step from compression and left a gap.
The filter my dealer gave me is the old part #14501673990
and the newer one is #14501673991.
But I now have a NAPA 1324 filter on and seems to work fine.

Willman, thanks for the post. What do you think the deal is? Reckon the dealer gave you the wrong part or some kind of mix up? It would be interesting to see what their take on it is. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

demote, I belive there was a post awhile back about the o-ring type filters dripping and I was going to keep my eye out for that.
I think thats why Mahindra changed gasket types.
I wasnt prepared to scrap a new filter and lose $17.00 of oil though.
I am wondering if they also changed the filter mount.

The Napa filter is a good alternate and probably cheaper. The auto parts store near me didn't have a WIX 51324 (same as NAPA 1324) last week, but had a WIX 51626 (same as NAPA 1626) which actually looks to be closer to the length of the factory filters.

mboulais, I went with the NAPA 1324 because of previous discussions on this board.
My only concern, be it small, is the pressure releif valve setting.
The NAPA is 16psi but have no info on the stock filter.
However I did cut open the original filter and tested the relief valve with a spring loaded compression tester.
The valve started to open at about 3 lbs and was fully open at about 8 lbs.
I am ok with the NAPA at 16 psi since releif valves only open with very thick oil or completly cloged filters.
The right oil and regular filter changes should eliminate either problem.

mboulais, I think you found the closest match to stock.
I went to NAPA filter web site and compared the specs between the 1324 & 1626.
The 1626 is closer to stock the size as you have stated, but also the 1626 relief valve setting is 8-11 psi, closer to stock in my opinion.

I would also mention on filters with flat gaskets it will sometimes detach from old filter on removal, and remain on the engine and when you install new filter it will make a big mess.

After seeing this thread get so much attention I felt I would
do the Homework.

Here are the oil filters that are a direct replacement for the
Mahindra Oil Filter on the 3510/4110

They have a 8-11 psi bypass valve

Purolater L14619 , Fram PH3985 , Lee LF2801 , WIX 51626
AC PF9 , NAPA 1626 , K&N2007

These filters also have automotive applications so you
could reference one of the listed vehicles when using other brands.

Some notes: I have chosen to use The K&N Oil filter HP2007
these cost around 8.00 but you will find they are of the highest quality of all listed.

Also The Fram PH3985 is a normally stocked item at Autozone
costs around $3.87
