While performing research about the contents of various service manuals being offered for the Massey 135 tractor, I made an interesting discovery. In addition to lacking any information about servicing the lubrication (oil pump) and other systems of the Continental Z-145 engine, no OEM Massey 135 service manuals I was able to find, including those sold by AGCO, cover the Continental Z-134 engine. This may not seem like a big deal, except that unlike the Deluxe and Vineyard versions which were equipped with the Continental Z-145 engine, the Massey 135 Special was equipped with a Continental Z-134 engine.

Since my last post, I've finished prepping and priming the steering box, oil pan, fan shroud, hood prop, and other miscellaneous components. Prepping the steering box presented quite a challenge.

Also, I finally managed to locate and order the missing parts of the service manual. They should be here within a week, then I can finally give the oil pump and related systems a proper inspection and/or overhaul. Given the inadequacies of existing service manual offerings, I'm starting to get some... ideas.

I finally finished sandblasting and priming the front axle support. It's a heavy and oddly shaped part, so preparing it for primer took a very long time because of all the nooks and crannies it has. While I was at it, I also took the time to grind down some of the casting flash for a smoother finish, and so rust would have fewer places to hide. Despite grinding off most of the casting flash, it still has a few indentations left over from the casting process which could trap dirt and promote rust, so I'll probably fill them with Bondo before painting it.

Today, I finally found the stamped chassis serial number, but still need to locate the information needed to decode it. Note that I'm not referring to casting numbers, or the tractor and engine serial numbers, this is different.

The missing parts of the service manual covering the Continental Z-145 four cylinder gasoline engine FINALLY arrived this afternoon, now I have all the information I need to get back on track with my Massey Ferguson 135 tractor restoration project.

Also, I finished sandblasting and priming the battery box assembly (194185M92 - Platform Assembly, Battery and Instrument) which reminds me... it's been a while since I've posted any pictures so I'll be sure to post some very soon, perhaps tonight if I get time.

A recent TBN forum thread about a distributor for the Continental Z-145 four cylinder gasoline engine reminded me that I needed to check mine for wear.

Massey Ferguson Distributor Part Number: 194059M91
Delco-Remy (GM) Distributor Part Number: 1112-644

Tonight, I removed the distributor cap, rotor button, and dust cover; then removed the upper internal parts of the distributor, and everything appears to be reasonably clean and in great shape, including the timing advance springs which attach to the fly-out weights. There is no side to side shaft play and only very minimal up and down shaft play, which feels like it's well within specs. I'll need to eventually remove and disassemble the distributor so I can sandblast and paint the housing, and more accurate shaft end-play measurements can be taken at that time.

The only obvious problem I found was that the oil wick, #22 in the image below (part number: 1024922M1), was missing. Finding or making a replacement oil wick will be easy, so it's no cause for concern.

My manual arrived last evening as well, I'm assuming you no longer need the information regarding the oil system (pump, relief valve and spring). Good to hear, will be interested to hear how complete the new additions make your collection.

A&I Products: A leading manufacturer and distributor of agricultural and industrial products

A link I use because I have a copy of their parts manual.

Below is a view of the oil pump from my manual, tolerances and measurements included are;

Pump
Drive gear (15) backlash - 0.004 - 0.008 (shim pack thickness)
Internal gear (5 & 8) not to exceed 0.007
Diametral clearances between gears and pump body - 0,003 - 0,004
Pump shaft bushing designed to provide 0.0035-0.0065 diametral clearance for pump shaft

Relief valve
Plunger type pressure relief (10-14)
Not less than 7 psi at idle and 20-30 psi at 1800 rpm
Relief set by number of adjusting washers (13)
Relief spring (13) should have a free length of 2 inches, should test at 8 1/4 pounds (compression) at a working length of 1 3/8ths inches.

I'll have to check to be certain, but those specifications seem to be close to the ones contained in my manuals.
