Since your in Ohio with snowfalls similar to where I live, have you considered finding a descent running old small pickup for cheap? The box could be scrapped and splitter mounted in its place. I was assisting at a tractor club auction, and someone had brought this modified rig to sell.

Here are a couple of options. They are from C&H distributors. Both are designed to be used with a forklift, but I'm sure a bit of modifications would make them work with a loader bucket.

Brush cutter gear box. I have been using 90wt gear oil in a Woods brush cutter gear box. I have heard of filling the gear box with grease to offset bad seals.
