Can someone explain to me how a syncro shuttle works. Do you have to use a clutch to change speeds?
Does the reverser use the same speed as you were going forward.
Do you have to come to a stop to use the reverser.

Does said tractor have a hydraulic shuttle, or a synchrnized tranny with a mechanical shuttle?

Mark,

The terminology may differ across manufacturers. I have a NH TN55 with a mechanical synchro-shuttle. I have to use the clutch to change gears and to shift between forward and reverse. The speeds are the same for forward and reverse.* I don't have to come to a complete stop to change between forward and reverse, although I do.

A hydraulic shuttle would not require clutching.

Steve

Edit: My tractor has 8 speeds in both forward and reverse -- 4 in each of Ranges A (low) and B (high). I use the clutch and come to a complete stop to change ranges.

My Kubota has what they call GST (Glide Shift Transmission). Basically, it's an electronically controlled hyraulic actuator system that shifts the manual transmission and actuates the wet clutch. It doesn't need to be clutched, but there's a clutch pedal (dry clutch) that allows you to maneuver very carefully in fussy situations. I used the dry clutch a lot, last weekend, to pick up & place support posts under the shattered beams of my shed after a tree fell on it during our October snow storm. Made it a one man job.

You can shift it while it's moving.

I stop before I reverse it, but I'm not sure that I have to stop. Just never wanted the transmission to absorb all the energy of reversing the tractor. I spent a lot for it and treat it like it would be expensive to replace. Plus, we're kinda friends.

The reverser sometimes uses a slightly lower gear when you shift into reverse. This is because it is 12 speeds fwd & 8 rev. This actually works out well as I usually don't back up as fast as I drive forward.

I like it.

What smstonypoint said, we have a non synchro on a back hoe and had a synchro on our Case and now hydraulic on our Kubota M8540. We much prefer the hydraulic; getting too old for all that clutching.

On your Kubota, how would you inch the tractor while maintaining PTO speed? Let's say for bailing, brush hogging, or snow blowing when the going gets tough.

I recently got a Ford NH 345d industrial with a hydraulic shuttle. I am unsure of how I will like it in these situations.

I got the 12x12, so I can go pretty slow inn low 1st. I usually pull my BH in 2L or 3L and drop to 1L when I am going through some really big stuff. We pull a Woods DS1260 which is 10'6" cutting width.

To "inch" up to a fence or edge of a pond, I will use the clutch just as on any other tractor as well as my brakes if I misjudge the distance. It takes a little practice, but it is doable.

I must admit that sometimes if I am in a hurry, I will just use the L5030 for trimming after going over it with the M8540 and if I am in a really big hurry, I put my wife on the L5030 and me on the M8540.

Any heavy engaging work and hydrostatic Transmissions do not play well together.

Snow blowing with a Powershuttle is a cake walk compared to the sore heel after a long day of snow blowing with a hydrostatic trans. Same with sync shuttle.
Ours has 12F/12R, and with 5 gears below 1MPH, never a job that gets done that makes me want an HST again.

Hated snow blowing with the HST.

Do you have to come to a stop to use the reverser.

I have a JD 3520 PowerReverser. Once you have chosen what gear combination you want to use (B3 most of the time for me), you never want to use the clutch. Put the reverser on forward to drive forward, on neutral to stop or on reverse to reverse at the same speed you were driving forward. You don't need to stop before reversing but you may experience quite a jolt if you are driving at speed. Here's what the hydraulic contraption looks like.

+1. i don't have the hyd shuttle or power shuttle. My unit has a mechanical shuttle, with a 16x16 tranny. Works great. Especially blowing snow.

I have driven a power shift(24x24?) with hyd shuttle. Thats the cats ***.
