I didn't read all the responses so I don't know if somebody already said this. The overprotection of children is as dangerous as no protection at all. You have to moderate the dangers to reasonable level but you have to let them do stuff that is not completely safe. In example climb trees, use tools, drive on tractor or drive a tractor etc. They need to learn to take care of themselves. I used grow up in small machine shop. I have my share of accidents that could have potentially end up bad but I am better off today because of that. When our kids grew up we could have been classified as irresponsible parents but guess what they are all alive without major injuries and all have confidence in their abilities. All (we have four) of them graduated from college, are out of house, out of our payroll and on their own. If you ask them they will tell you they had great childhood.
