Why do people always stock up on bread and milk before a snowstorm?

I have no clue. Down here in my part of the world, our average snow fall ranges from a few flakes to maybe a lite dusting every 7 to 8 years and nothing will clear out a grocery store faster than someone saying it MIGHT snow.
