Hello! I am new to the site and new to older tractors (or any tractor for that matter) and I'm happy there are forums for older tractors here.

Q: Does anyone have an idea as to why my PTO whines when disengaged? With PTO engaged it runs fine with no noise - but I fear just running it all the time would rob power, wear prematurely and is unsafe with the shaft spinning all the time.

This has been the case since I got the tractor. Recently drained flushed and replaced fluids on transmission, PTO drive and PTO housing as the fluid was badly emulsified.

Any ideas would be welcome.
Thanks!

When you say running all the time does that mean with the pto lever in the off position? If so there should be an adjustment you can do to tighten up the pto brake my 350 has a cover on the pto housing with 2 adjustment screws under it for this purpose the owners manual lists the procedure if you have one.
