Finally got to use my new hay spear on the L3240. Father in-law got 47 4x5's rolled up last Wednesday. Two brother in laws and me got it 1/2 mile from the field ,stacked in the barns in 2 hours. Using my Tractor, a old MF and a 20ft Gooseneck. They are pretty impressed with my "little" Kubota. With HST I could load and unload probably twice as fast as the old Massey. Now it's raining again here in Mo. So I'll have to wait to have more fun.

AK,, that was last year,, this year who knows,, rice hay which is a by product,, sells for 30 dollars normally (5x6),, but last year I paid 110 dollars a bale,, not the best of hays but it kept them quiet till some grass started to grow.. It got to the point that I had to cut my herd by 80%.. still waiting on the rain.. three years ago I would have had one cutting in the barn and getting ready for the second by now,, I am still looking for my first.. Lou

Sounds a bit tough, yet... Sorry to hear that the weather hasn't eased up. Relatives in the Dakota's have gotten some rain this year and the crops are on the mend. But, replacement heifers are hovering in the $1,700 range!

Where in the Dakota's ?? My wife has folks in Sioux fall SD .. I read that record numbers of replacement heifers are being held back .. Future will tell the story. Hay prices simply confuse me ... When there is none they sore to extreme highs ... Then this yr as wet as this given area is an ample supply for those that have been able to get into the field it's cheap .. I saw an ad the other day on CL ... 4x6 net wrapped Bermuda with 500 lbs to the acre of fertilize good clean hay that was sprayed $30 a roll ... Give me a break if anyone really believes that you can spray and apply FIVE HUNDRED # to the acre and then sell for 30 bucks .. I may be way off base .. Just doesn't figure out for me .. I may need someone to explain that too me.

Replacement heifers are high here too! I used to do cow/calf, but when the drought began a few years ago, I sold them all off. Last year, bought some calves and raised. Sold all but one last month. I hope he will go into the freezer this winter.

I fear hay prices, this year. I gave $7.00/sq. bale, in the pasture, last summer. Luckily, I had good pastures through most of last winter, so still have some nice square bales in my barn. Might not be as good as having "fresh" hay, but been protected and was really nice, when stacked in there. I should know in the next day or two, if the pasture behind the horse pasture is worth baling into round bales. The grass looks good, and is relatively weed free, so no spraying needed. I'd love to add a few round bales to my supplies, for the horses. One never knows how long the drought will linger, or what the prices will do, because of operating costs.

I guess I am the odd horse owner. As long as the hay is clean, not all weeds, and not moldy, etc., I figure my horses can eat it. If they can pick around the weeds in the pasture, they can pick around a few in a round bale! I'd rather they do that, than go hungry, because there was no hay!

If someone explain it to you will you post it.. I would like to know that myself.. fertilize is costing me about 400 dollars a ton,, 26-3-3,, so he putting 500 dollars pre acre in fertilize plus fuel, equipment, wrap,, you would have to get 20 roles to the acre to break even.. with out labor.. heck of a field.:confused3:. No hay done around here, too wet. Those that chose to put in for silage tore up the fields and I fear some may have difficulty with another cutting . There does not seem to be a window anytime soon. We have 13 cows and just do it to feed out and sell what may be left. We always keep 2 years worth in case of a bad season. Our cows are not picky our hay is average quality at best. We have stopped putting fertilizer down other than manure due to the cost. We still get what we need for us and it's just not worth cost per yield for us.

Already cut one time, put nitrogen down around 2 1/2 weeks ago, got seven inches of rain and I swear I could cut hay today. Going to wait another 2 weeks. We suppose to get rain this week.
