How long is this boom pole? It just seems to be way too big for a small tractor.

I'd strip most of that steel off, as I don't think it's adding much stregth to the boom in vertical load handling and hurting you with nearly dead weight. If you're using the boom pole as it was intended, side loads should be kept very low. Big side loads applied many feet aft of and high above the rear axle is just asking for tractor stabililty problems.
