Hey guys. I'm in the market for my first tractor, and a used John Deere 3320 is what I'm considering. The most important implement will be a front grapple and here is where I have questions..

on 2011 a newer 3320's I see that they have the joystick with the button on them to control the 3rd function. From researching, I believe this is done by running lines from the rear scv all the way to the grapple, and the button on the joystick opens and closes the grapple. I really like this setup. (correct me If I am wrong about what I just explained)

On older than 2011 3320's, I see that they don't have that nifty joystick. Can I add that joystick with the button and have that "true" 3rd function? I am aware of the diverter setup, and I do not mind that but would definitely rather have a true 3rd function operation. I definitely DONT want to use the mechanical lever to control the grapples open and close function

Also, ideally I would also like to have the power beyond hookup in the rear of the tractor because I would have access to a backhoe attachment. Would this complicate anything?

So what exactly are my options with controlling the grapple on pre and post 2011 3320's? Thanks guys!

I have a 2008 3320 and once asked about adding the button style third function control and was told its not possible for the pre 2011's. So I added the Deere 3rd function kit with the mechanical lever and haven't found it to be a problem as its very close to the joystick. Here's my set up using the Deere oil line kit going from rear 3rd function outlets to the loader.

The 3rd function outlets are the 2 lower right ones with hoses attached, the power beyond is the looped hose outlets to the left and unused port with dust cap to the far left. The other four with colored dust caps are from the electric diverter valve for my top and tilt.

Not with the Deere kit and oil lines since the 3rd function uses the 3rd SCV that's standard on the 3320. Some of those diverter style kits you buy from other manufactures may impact the power beyond but I don't know by what degree if at all.

Thanks for the response Eric. Is using the lever for the grapple functions something you got used to pretty well? If I can accept the lever style operation, finding a 3320 will become a much easier task.

For me it hasn't been an issue since that's all I know. I suppose if a person was used to the button type it might seem a bit more awkward until they got used to it. Normally once I grab something with the grapple I don't need to touch the lever again until its time to release it.

Yes in 2011 JD had a major change in the hydraulics in the 3x20 and 4x20 series, they went from manually operated SCV's to electro-hydraulic.
You can certainly add aftermarket stuff to the older ones, something like a diverter is the easiest if you goal is just a grapple, we sell a DIY kit and Artillian sells a complete bolt on kit that can be added in under two hours.

Giving this a little bump since it's not showing up as new since the database issue yesterday morning.

I've got a 2006 JD 3320 with quite a few attachments for it.....including a grapple on my 300cx loader. I've got the scv rear remotes and a JD hardlines kit to the front of the loader which controls the grapple. I've got a Markham 48" grapple. Absolutely love this set up. Never felt a need for an electric control for the grapple operation. The SCV valve works really nice and you won't lose any time in it's operation.....IMO.

I wouldn't waste the time and money for antother valve.....as I think you will get along just fine with this set up. I would do this same set-up again if I were looking for another tractor. I have not had a need for another valve for my uses.

I do run my stump grinder using my joystick to control two cylinders on the stump grinder (sweep and up / down). When I do this....I connect the grinders attachments to the Joystick valve....and then plug the loader lift cylinders into the scv connections (at the center of the tractor). Really works slick....and I have not needed another valve or splitter to run all these hydraulic functions. :D

If FEL operations are a priority, make sure you get the CX loader for max lift.
