I have a 2004 John Deere tractor and the 5 amp fuse blows after about 2 seconds when running.

Welcome to tbn. I own a 790. Don't know why your fuse blows. Try posting it in the John Deere owning/operating forum. You will have better luck.

I did find today that when I disconnect the connector to the solenoid the fuse does not blow. when I connect the solenoid and turn the key to the on position the 5 amp fuse blows. Do you know how to check he fuel solenoid with and ohm meter.

the solenoid is shorting out, check for a connection from solenoid to ground.
