I am looking at a 5055E with 16.9-28 tires and 9x3 Transmission

I had it for a SHORT test drive around the dealer's lot.

Speed chart seems ok, but looks like C reverse is useless for anything, B reverse seemed fast, A reverse slow (snowblower?)

B range looks like only "field speeds" C range highway only, A range looked nice and slow.

Will I totally hate the 9x3 trans and mega lever PTO? I like simplicity and am nervous about power shuttle and computers of the 12x12.

Tractor would be for haying and I would put a 553 loader on it in the future (round bales, manure and snow removal)

I've run right hand reverse loaders and didn't care for them that much, but I am used to LH reverse.

I think the 9x3 will fit all those tasks well that you mentioned. The one thing I would think where you'd wish you had more gears is if you were running a baler. I will say that the 12x12 that you can get on them as an option has a good track record of being pretty reliable. Plus you have a few more gears.

I normally bale around the 4 MPH mark so B2 probably be fine.

I'd prefer the 12x12 anyways from a gear use stand point..but 9x3 should be less resale/cheaper to buy.

I think you about nailed it in your assessment of the 9x3 ground speeds. IMHO the 9x3 would be better if reverse was closer in gearing to 1st gear rather than 2nd. I would prefer a manual 12spd shuttle, as I dislike computers and power shuttles. For loader work I like a left hand shuttle, but right hand isn't that big a inconvenience.

Given the choices available, I prefer the 9x3.
I personally like the mega handle PTO. I dislike electric PTO controls, where you can't control the engagement rate.

I can't speak to haying, but for round bales, manure and snow removal it works for me.

That's good to know. I like being able to feather PTO as well. I sat on a 12x12 and I am not a fan of the shuttle switch gear, I prefer an actual lever anyways. I can't find a 12x12 speed chart (and didn't think to take a photo of one on a tractor) but I imagine the gearing is nicer.

$2500 option for 12x12 and all the new ones on the lots have it.

In section 130 of the owners manual is ground speeds for the various transmissions and different rear tire sizes. I have included a link to the manual.

Thanks, just have to convert into MPH, but does look like better usable speeds, especially in reverse. Having said that, I don't think I'd pass on a 9x3 if the price was right.

Anyone use a 9x3 for road haulage? i.e. loaded wagons/trailers/spreaders. Looks like C1 is tall to start something like a rack of 140 square bales. Appears you can get moving in B1 and double clutch the left hand range lever in C1 then use the right syncro lever from there.

If the load was heavy enough not to start in C1, I would be concerned about being able to stop traveling at C2, or C3 speeds.
B3 and C1 are almost the same ground speed. Soooooo if you don't go beyond C1, you may as well stay in B range.

If C2 or C3 ground speeds seem safe, then you could double clutch as you suggest. I'm sure that would work.

Best, Bill

Good to know, I do a fair amount of road haulage as most fields require at least a couple minutes in road gear to get to, so any crop coming off has to leave that way as well. I have some hills where I am dropping 8-7-6 in an 8-speed box hauling uphill, but that isn't the bulk of hauling.
