87 octane fuel is fine. octane in the 50's was much lower than it is today... these engines are low rpm, low compression.
I'd run a heat range higher on the spark plugs due to the cruddy gas we have. thus champion h12 / 512 vs oem h10 al437 are good too.
lead addative? why? Tetra Ethyl Lead was originally added as a octane modifier. ( PS.. ethanol is an octane modifier too! )
save your money on the snake oils.
your machine left the factory with hardened valve seats. if you want to add soemthing to the gas, go buy a 2.50$ quart of walmart type F atf and add a few ounces to the fuel every tank.
as for oil.. ? run a 15w40 C rated (diesel) oil.. it will have more zddp in it. though any old jiffy store 10w30 is better than what was around in 1950..
