Rarely its the detents, unless excessively worn.. Bearings? More likely, especially if it likes to jump out when you go downhill and the trans overspeeds slightly.

The thrust washers must be checked as well. If worn, the 3rd gear on the lower shaft will rock (not maintaining axial alignment with the shaft). This was the cause of my 860 jumping out of gear. I know this because I replaced the bearings and then had to tear EVERYTHING back down to fix the thrust washer issue.

I can access the two lower ones but I only can screw out half way before the footboard stops them. You are right Probably not the detents though. It comes out of third as soon as you let the clutch out. Will stay in if you put alittle pressure on the shifter.

I finally remembered to take a picture of my tractor. Looks like 2 of the 3 are accessible and one would be close but probably easier to remove the step.
