Oil & Fuel Alternate oil filter for Kohler Courage V Twin?

/ Alternate oil filter for Kohler Courage V Twin? #11
Having just cut open the long version of the Kohler filter from my Courage Pro 20 V-twin (first oil change), I have no issues replacing them with a Motorcraft FL400 (Supertech 3600) or color of your choice provided you have the room. Champion or whoever makes the Kohler filters does a good job, but there's nothing special about them.

If you are going to use an alternate oil filter (or any other part), go to the manufactures web site....such as Fram. They will let you enter a competitors part number, and you will get the Fram number along with ALL competitors part numbers. The Kohler oil filter part number for my 26 hp v-twin is 52-050-02, the Fram part number is ph7575. I've never had any trouble with Fram filters in the past. You can enter the Fram part number and get all of the specs for the filter and do a comparison such as the PH 3614 and PH 3600 are the same except the overall height of the filter. Don't just go on line and take the word of someone who posted an alternate part number.....do your own research. You may save your self a lot of money later. You will also save a lot of money by skipping the brand loyalty, and get a quality part with a proven history, not just a Kohler brand, or a filter from the dealer you got your tractor. Parts stores will give you a better deal.

Filters are Not created Equal

I would recommend using the Original Equipment Kohler 52-050-02-S that sells for about $8 or $9. Kohler recommends changing the Oil & Filter every 100 Hours of use. For most people that's once a year. How much will you save buying an after market filter??

I can understand using the Original Equipment Kohler 52-050-02-S, but keep in mind; Kohler isn't a manufacturer of oil filters....Fram, Purolator, wix, and a few others (very few) are.

The Original Equipment Kohler 52-050-02-S filter is only available at Sears in my area, and they sell it for $18.00 not the $7 or $8 quoted by Emerichsales. I run my tractor pretty hard in the winter pushing snow in two driveways (560 feet each), and in the summer grading my long driveway (560 feet) and mowing 7 acres. I change my oil about 4 times per year (between 50 and 80 hours). The Fram filter I use costs $7. I think there is a big savings for me (about $44 per year times 4 years) and probably several other people saving as much as well.

Fram filters are used in several applications in the military and in other industries, as well as hundreds of thousand of cars and trucks (works great in my cummins diesel), I don't think I'm using an inferior filter since Kohler probably just puts their name on a fram filter painted black. Purolator, wix, mororcraft, mopar, or what ever after market filter you use should be a direct replacement...not one that looks like it will fit. Also only use a filter (oil, air, fuel) that has a well known and trusted name.

You can get them on Amazon for anywhere from $4-$10 for Kohler OEM and other manufacturers. Many other online sellers have them in that price range also. Try evilbay as a last resort too.

I don't know how factual this individual's statements are. He appears to have dissected various brands of filters and reported his findings. He seems to have a vendetta against Fram since everything he reports about Fram is VERY negative. This appears to have been written in 1999 which is pretty old information. I'm not claiming his findings are true OR false but I have 4 vehicles in my household, including a motor home, plus my 3235 Cub and I have been using Fram filters for the 50 plus years and have yet to have a problem. I had to tear down my 1978 Cub 1450 with Kohler 14HP engine with 1100 hours, to replace the oil pan. The insides of the engine were very clean. I used Fram filters and Quaker State oil in that tractor since it was new.

CJ-8, It really isn't that interesting about FRAM quality. Fram is a company that has been around for a long time. You can't stay in business if you sell an inferrior product, or one that nobody is willing to buy. Just like the other major companies that make and sell filters. They all have good quality. Just like jeans, there are a lot of brands of jeans. Most are pretty good. You find one that you like, and you stick with it.
