Call the person that you bought it from and tell him you "didn't pay much attention because it looked so easy" and ask them to
explain it to you again. I would not beat the levers with a sledge hammer. Clean the area out and lube, you should be OK.

Lift the arms up and put the front edge of the bucket in the dirt. Open the handle as far as it will easily go. Take a screwdriver and dig out the pockets where the wedges come though the bucket. Take an old bolt or piece of rod, and wack the end of the wedge with a little maul as the bolt is held against the rod/bolt. Don't just force the levers. You'll just tear up the levers, bushing and bolt on the Bobtach.

Hit it with high pressure water then air to dry. Then use a dry film lube. I used Fluid Film on mine, which worked great until it got dirty. Still works fine, but I want to clean it before I use it again to avoid jamming sand into the joints.
