Hello all

I have a couple trailers, tank frames etc that I need do something to coat/get rid of rust. I've seen Rust Guy, another product One Step (or something like that) etc etc...

Anyone have experience with any of this stuff??:confused3:

In the marine industry where everything is rusting all the time, this is the goto product: Ospho Rust Treatment - Since 1947

It's a water thin acid solution that is applied to rusted metal, after the loose stuff is chipped away. The next step is Red Oxide Primer which, unlike a number of finishes will adhere to Ospho treated metal. If you are going to use Red Oxide Primer, be sure to read the Material Safety Data Sheets as you need to take certain precautions.

I use FluidFilm and do my own undercoating. Seems to work well and is affordable to do yourself. Nice thing is that is not a paint, so it never hard seals anything. It also lubes all your metal joints which I see as a plus.

I've used Zero Rust when I restored an old Landcruiser. Good stuff. Hit the rust with phosphoric acid to convert it first then applied the coating.

Many in the auto sites advertise POR 15. I've heard its good too.

YMMV

This is some good stuff... been using a lot of it on a truck at work.

After 2 coats brushed on and new custom fab'd crossmembers installed. Goes on thick, stays kinds soft, sticks like crazy. Time will tell... minimal surface prep needed. Wire wheel on a grinder, wipe with thinner, and paint it.

The way this Rust Guy stuff is advertised it seems you "paint" it on, some chemical magic happens, and it forms its own hard shell finish which you can then paint over if you want (with their recommended paint of course but they do say you can use anything) but don't have to... I have two good utility trailers that are mechanically very sound but rust is getting pretty pervasive. I also have a maple sugarbush and some of my sap tank angle iron stands starting to show a bit. Like to nip them in the bud now as well as refinish the two trailers....I'd like to use a product that truly "bonds" to the rust and will be a permanent type shell...

Keep the thoughts coming :cool2:

That sounds like this stuff that I have used.

Paint Over Rust with Extend Rust Neutralizer from Loctite Adhesives

I have found it works well except where exposed to salt spray...and they say just that in what it's NOT recommended for.

For undercoating trucks, cars and trailers I have been spraying with used motor oil annually for over 30 years now. It's messy for a short while, but IT WORKS.

I have all good things to say about this Rustguy Product. Used it On my equipment and I've yet to see any rust come back.
