Hello! Thats my tie rod after one quick wrong movement with my tractor in the forest. IMG_0571.JPG
Can I just bent it? With or without heat? I was also wondering if it is wise to buff it up. Maybe put it through a wider pipe and weld it. If there is enough room of course, what may be the negatives of doing so?

Thank you!

If you have welding capabilities, I would get a new section of rod or tube and cut the adjustable ends off existing one and weld them on the new material... The hours trying to straighten the old one will cost a lot more than just purchasing new materials....

I agree with Dale. I assume it was perfectly straight before. If it was straight you really did a number on it. If you do that type work often, consider a tougher weldable alloy. Are the ends threaded or welded on? A local steel source would probably be a lot cheaper than the OEM one. I always check that out first. If it is welded ends; do you have that capability? I would use O/A welding process my self. Take the proper precautions to prevent crystallization of the metal.

I’d probably straighten it, but I’ve got a press and a big vice. If you don’t have those straightening it would be harder and I’d probably go with the cut apart and weld new middle in idea.

Thank you all! Yes I can weld, and I would need it tougher. I use the tractor for logging so its really hard environment. I am pretty sure it was straight before. The ends are screwed in not welded.

Don’t make it too much stronger. The next thing you break might be a lot more expensive to fix or replace.

Did you hit something with the rod itself, or was it bent by compression in its tie function?

Absolutely! Making it stronger isn't going to solve the cause of your problem, just make the damage worse and much more expensive.

When you make the new link do two so you have a ready spare. Threaded ends make it easy to duplicate by just threading the new rod ends. I would double check at your dealer's parts counter on whether it is straight or has a bend in it when new. Investigate the scenario of the assembly; you may find a way to protect such a vulnerable part with a shield of some sort. Maybe a piece of channel iron across the front of the tractor. Look for other vulnerable parts with your use factors; there may be other points Ole Murph may select next.
