Come to think of it, I don't recall the adults doing much of the cracking when I was a kid, either!
I started out using a framing hammer, but I got the same effect as your 3-pounder and also caught my fingers more. Switching to the small finishing hammer meant more taps but fewer homogenized nuts. The shells that are just broken into large pieces yield their meat pretty easy. One problem is that the color of the inner shell is the same as the skin of the nut meat, and now I'm gonna have to very carefully sort through the product so I don't cause a broken tooth down the line!
